ooc: metagaming and fictionality re legendary/historical characters

Jun 26, 2011 15:02

Hey all! As you may have noticed, our original Robin Hood (Penny-mun that was) has returned to pick up Robin and Pufnstuf.

Penny/Puf is fine with Robin being recognized as a legendary figure. That means your character can know about him from folklore, etc. Our rule against fourth-wall breakage does prohibit your character from recognizing he's specifically the Robin of the TV series Robin of Sherwood, however.

Other characters we know of who are fine with being known as legendary and/or historical:

Beowulf
- HH Beowulf is from the 2007 Avary-Gaiman film adaptation. Beowulf-mun is cool with your character knowing who he is and being familiar with the epic Anglo-Saxon poem of the same name. (This particular film adaptation goes so far as to posit the composition of the poem within Beowulf's lifetime and to imagine it's sung every year on, like, Beowulf Day or something.) This does not mean your character can have read/watched/etc the Gaiman-Avary film or script thereof.

Yukimura
- HH Yukimura is from Samurai Deeper Kyo. There was a historical Sanada Yukimura as well, and Yukimura-mun has stated that HH Yukimura is not surprised that he has become part of history. This does not mean your character can have read/watched/etc Samurai Deeper Kyo.

Mr. Wednesday
- HH Wednesday is from the novel American Gods. He is a god. Characters who would be familiar with his mythology of origin or who would recognize other supernatural beings are welcome to "recognize" the god who uses the alias Mr. Wednesday. This does not mean your character can have read/watched/etc the novel American Gods, coverage regarding the upcoming series, or what have you.

Anyone else who has a similar sort of legendary/historical thing going on with a character, feel free to post here and we'll add it to the list! Most of this is stuff that players already know just via regular gameplay, but new folks or newly-returned folks can't be expected to know it, so we may as well put it all in one place. (We can link it in the sidebar as well.)

CHARACTERS WITH LEGENDARY/HISTORICAL/MYTHIC STATUS (muns' comments are linked):

Beowulf, a legendary hero (see above)
Castiel, an angel (Judeo-Christian tradition; canon is "Supernatural")
Cthulhu, a god (Cthulhu mythos; canon is UVOD)
Death of the Endless, a personification (archetype/deity figure perhaps; canon is Sandman)
Andrew Jackson, the disembodied head of a former U.S. President (historical; canon is Ansem Retort)
Gabriel, an archangel (Judeo-Christian tradition, and in his canon he has impersonated a Norse deity; canon is "Supernatural")
Robin of Loxley, a legendary hero (aka Robin Hood; see above)
Shoggies, mythic creatures (shoggoths, Cthulhu mythos; canon is UVOD)
Mr. Wednesday, a god (Norse mythology; see above)
Lenneth Valkyrie, a valkyrie (Norse mythology; canon is Valkyrie Profile)
Sanada Yukimura, a 17th-century samurai (historical; see above)
