A blonde girl in a brightly-colored costume came tumbling out of nowhere, flapping her arms like mad.

Spoiler’s death-journal, day whatever. I’m currently falling to my doom. Which is weird, because I thought I was already at ‘my doom’. Shouldn’t whole ‘Steph is dead’ thing be doomy enough? The apex of doom, if you will?

"Oh, I have. Usually when breaking up drug rings. It's all Lenord Skynard, and demin cut-offs, and ick..."

Another deadgirl? Why would I get sent to a second afterlife?

"Hm. Kind of hard to describe. I just tend to come back when my friends need me. Not corporeally, just sort of a 'don't go towards the light' kind of deal."

Yep, that's the roadhouse back home, all right. Maybe they're like those prefab sheds they sell, and they come complete with the neon Bud signs and watered-down booze and skeezy bartenders?

So were you like in a limbo? I was, 'til I came here. The Hat made me solid again. If you weren't corporeal, how'd you make the interventions work?

Steph giggled. "That's gotta be it! How else could they all have the same three stools, and all of 'em broken?"

"I don't think it was limbo. There were a lot of nice people there, lots of things to do. I got to hang around with the Blue Beetle- that was pretty cool. I just popped over to earth when I was needed. As for the interventions, all credit goes to the interventionees. I was just there to offer encouragement."

*Oh dear Cepheid. Costume, complete with cape (let's ignore for a moment that Zel wears a cape as well) plus falling out of the sky equals... Zel takes the precaution of putting earplugs in before greeting the applicant.*

Steph figured that this creature had sensitive hearing, hence the earplugs. She lowered her voice accordingly.

"Hello back! I like your cape."

*Zel removes the earplugs.* Sorry. It's just that the last person I met who went around in a costume like that was rather... enthusiastic. Particularly with greetings. Nice to meet you, anyway. I'm Zelgadiss Greywords; call me Zel. *He holds out a hand.*

The last person? Could there be other capes here?

Steph shook his hand firmly. "Hi Zel, I'm Robin. You said there were other people in costumes around here?"

Cute girl. She reminds me of Koneko and the others.

"You're...dead? Did you get brought back to life, or are you actually some kind of zombie?" Haruka asks, eyeing the girl closely.

"A Zombie? I hope not!"

Ack! Identity crises! Last time Cass saw me, I was looking pretty corpse like.

Steph touched her face. It seemed smooth enough.

"Oh God, do I look like a Zombie? Give it to me straight!"

"Iie, you don't look like a zombie." Haruka grins at the girl's reaction. "You look like a cute girl. You just said you'd died, and given some of the other people wandering around this place I wasn't sure if you were still dead, or if you'd been brought back."

Steph visibly relaxed. "Thank goodness. I couldn't take being a Zombie." It took a moment for the 'cute' comment to register. "Hey, thanks!"

"It looks like I've been brought back. I'm just not sure for how long."

[eclipse_demon]

Another previously dead applicant meant another chance to further his study. "Have you any idea what brought you here?"

"Nope." Steph shrugged. "I'm curious about it myself. Not too concerned, though. I'm assuming there's a family member with an identity crises, or some sort of haphazard UNIVERSE CHANGING EVENT designed to boost sales dimensional paradox. It'll sort itself out."

For several seconds he stared just beyond the girl, looking instead at the wispy threads of magic still streaming down from where she'd fallen, trying to discern what type they were. He supposed they must be invisible to the human eye. "How were you brought back to life before you appeared here?" he asked, focussing on her now.

"No idea," Steph said, without even the slightest hint of panic. "This thing is kind of the norm where I'm from. I'm sure I'll find out in due course."

Freshly named a Slytherin, Reilly was making his slow, limping way to the Sorting Room door when he saw the girl appear in midair and make her surprisingly agile descent.

"Excuse me, Miss. Your outfit." He looked her over. "Is this the sort of thing that's considered fashionable these days? I've lost a few years since I died, you see. Somewhere around eighty, it seems."

"Oh, it's the height of fashion. That is, if you consider Kevlar to be a viable wardrobe accessory. Your outfit is pretty nifty! What is that, 1920's?"

Yes, it is. 1925, to be exact.

"Kevlar is a bullet-resistant material. My outfit's lined with it. Kinda heavy, but more than worth the hassle."

Great against bullets, not so great against power drills. Ugh.
