Jadzia Dax, Star Trek: DS9

((ooc: If anyone’s interested, I’m playing Jadzia during early season 4, just after the events of Rejoined.))

Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax walked into the great hall, tricorder at the ready. Not moments ago, Jadzia had been working contently in one of Quark’s holo-suites, running a simulation meant to examine some recent energy fluctuations in the ( Read more... )

"Eight lifetimes? How'd you manage that? You're not another zombie, are you?" Because, yeah, Catelyn Stark was all the zombie Tyrion wanted to see now or ever.

"Zombie? Of course not." Maybe this was a horror simulation? "I'm a joined Trill." Jadzia ran a finger along the side of her neck. "See the spots? No Zombies here."

"That pretty much tells me nothing," Tyrion observes. "Please explain. Are you... immortal, then?"

"No, no. A few steps away from that, I suppose. I'm a Trill, a humanoid 'alien'-" that was going to take some getting used to! "in a symbiotic relationship with another organism called a symbiont. Just before a Trill dies, the symbiont is given a new Trill to join with. The new Trill is gifted with the memories, knowledge, and experiences of all of the symbiont’s previous hosts."

Jadzia had never truly realized what a mouthful the process of symbiosis really was. On Trill, it was so natural, such a part of their culture, that for years no even bothered trying to explain the process to outsiders. It would be the equivalent of explaining that you had a mouth, and it was for communicating and taking in food, or that you had a bum, and while it was a bit superfluous, it was really nice to look at,

Please tell me 'gagh' isn't as disgusting as it sounds?

"Not at all! It's a Klingon delicacy. The only two ingredients are unprocessed serpent worms and an acquired taste."

"It's the 'acquired taste' part of it that makes me want to tell you you're a dirty, dirty liar." Also the 'worms' part. But hey, there was no accounting for taste, so Thomas smiled and offered a hand to shake. "Thomas Raith. Pleased to meet you."

Jadzia smiled, and took his hand warmly.

"It helps when you've had a couple centuries to warm up to it. Jadzia Dax. Lovely to meet you."

"So, Thomas Raith, where the hell I am?"

(*curses lj*)

'Archaeology? Is that digging up things like old art? Can I see some, please?' the nine-year-old asks, eyes fixed firmly on Jadzia's.

Yes, Rose has misheard. You think that will stop her pestering for more art to look at?

((no worries!))

"That's the gist of it! Although, instead of 'old' we usually say 'historic'" Jadzia crouched down a bit, so that she was eye level with Rose. "Which is just another name for 'old'! Unfortunately, I don't have any artifacts with me today."

Rose stares at Jadzia.

'Well, since I come from this time and I don't think you do--because you have posh electric stuff--I think that might be my sort of art you're on about.'

She crosses her arms, and, with a dignified air, 'I know what historical is. We had to do a project on Egypt in History, and they were old.'

Jadzia held her tricorder out to Rose. "It's not very posh at the moment. It stopped working. But you are a very observant little girl, to notice it's not from this time period." Whatever 'this time period' was!

"What's your name?"

((I can't remember my seasons/eps. Can I assume she's pre-Worf? And is 'Rejoined' the one where she ends up walking into the amniotic pool of trills?))

How can you've been both husband an' wife, or both mother an' father?

daxtastic January 17 2007, 23:53:17 UTC
((Yup, pre-Worf. He’s on the station, but they aren’t together. Rejoined is the episode where she almost gets back together with a symbiote that a previous Dax host was married to.))

Jadzia shrugged. “Different genders, different labels.”

"I’m a Trill," Jadzia said. "Do you know what that is?"

No ma'am, I'm afraid I don't. You've been both genders?

daxtastic January 18 2007, 00:14:36 UTC
"Sure have! Trill is the name of my species. Joined Trills, like me, are part Trill and part symbiont. The symbiont is passed on from Trill to Trill. That means that we get all of the memories and knowledge from the previous symbionts. Some of the previous hosts of my symbiont have been male."

Jadzia smiled, apologetically. "It's a bit complicated, I'm afraid."

Hi. I'm Laura, and this is Galahad, *scritches treecat chin* - you've had more than one lifetime too? How'd you work that?

daxtastic January 18 2007, 00:00:31 UTC
"Hello, Laura. Hello, Galahad."

"I'm a Trill. We're a symbiotic race, and a small portion of us are joined with organisms called symbionts. When we die, the symbiont gets a new host. Dax, the symbiont I host, has the knowledge and memories of seven previous Trill."

When you say 'joined with', you mean like, umm - surgically? 'Cause this guy and I are bonded, but we're still basically ourselves, y'know? Does one of you like take over the other?

And if you've got seven different lives in your head, don't they all get jumbled up?

Reply

daxtastic January 18 2007, 00:25:40 UTC
"There is a surgery involved, but it's a very simple one. The symbiont is there to provide me with knowledge and guidance, but we're in a symbiotic relationship. There is no battle for domination. Dax just wants to learn from me, and vice versa."

"My transition to life as a host has been relativly smooth, but there are times when the personalities that Dax has absorbed influence my behavior. I expected that going into the whole thing, though. As Jadzia Dax, I'm a completely different entity than Jadzia the Trill."

"If you don’t mind me asking, how are you ‘bonded’ with another entity? Are you human?"
