Jadzia Dax, Star Trek: DS9

((ooc: If anyone’s interested, I’m playing Jadzia during early season 4, just after the events of Rejoined.))

Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax walked into the great hall, tricorder at the ready. Not moments ago, Jadzia had been working contently in one of Quark’s holo-suites, running a simulation meant to examine some recent energy fluctuations in the ( Read more... )

"Eight lifetimes? How'd you manage that? You're not another zombie, are you?" Because, yeah, Catelyn Stark was all the zombie Tyrion wanted to see now or ever.

"Zombie? Of course not." Maybe this was a horror simulation? "I'm a joined Trill." Jadzia ran a finger along the side of her neck. "See the spots? No Zombies here."

"That pretty much tells me nothing," Tyrion observes. "Please explain. Are you... immortal, then?"

"No, no. A few steps away from that, I suppose. I'm a Trill, a humanoid 'alien'-" that was going to take some getting used to! "in a symbiotic relationship with another organism called a symbiont. Just before a Trill dies, the symbiont is given a new Trill to join with. The new Trill is gifted with the memories, knowledge, and experiences of all of the symbiont’s previous hosts."

Jadzia had never truly realized what a mouthful the process of symbiosis really was. On Trill, it was so natural, such a part of their culture, that for years no even bothered trying to explain the process to outsiders. It would be the equivalent of explaining that you had a mouth, and it was for communicating and taking in food, or that you had a bum, and while it was a bit superfluous, it was really nice to look at,

"Fascinating." And it really was, too. "What if you aren't... home when you're ready to move on to the next organism? Then what happens? And, um, how do the... er... symbiotes reproduce?"

"Unfortunately, if we aren't transported into another Trill, or able to return home within a few hours after the host's death, the symbiont dies. Obviously, all pains are taken to ensure that doesn't happen."

A thought occurred to Jadzia. "Which means I'll have to be extra careful while I'm here! There's not another Trill anywhere nearby." That was the understatement of the year.

"As far as reproduction goes- No one is really sure. I don't remember my time as an unjoined symbiont, nor do any other hosts. Our scientists assume it's an asexual process, but it's anyone's guess."

"Well, thankfully, there is a no-kill spell here at Hogwarts," Tyrion says, attempting comfort. "So you should be safe enough."

Dax breathed a large sigh of relief. Honestly, she could have kissed Tyrion. "You have no idea how comforting that is. Selfish as it is, 300 years tends to imbue one with an addiction to life.”

“...Or drive one insane” she added, as an afterthought. “Though I assure you, I'm the former."

Tyrion grins. "So you say," he says. "But you wouldn't really be an objective observer as to the state of your sanity, would you?"

"Good point." After all, she was in a magical castle, talking to wizards, and taking it all in stride. "I guess I'll just have to trust that you'll be kind enough to point it out if I start acting especially crazy."
