Lessons Learned: Sudden Morning Thunderstorms

Aug 12, 2010 10:00

I’m Drenched.

Woke up to a perfectly normal day, if a little muggy, but that’s not unusual for the area I’m in. As I got on the train I felt a couple rains drops, which was kinda strange since the sky was a light gray with partial sunshine in some areas. Little did I know.

When I finally got off the train (it goes underground a couple stops down from where I get on) there was thunder, lightning, and pouring rain. Oh, and it was really dark. As in, 8 o’clock at night dark. At 7:30 in the morning. And I still had to walk almost a mile to my office. Fortunately, I always carry an umbrella in my purse for such emergencies. Little good that it did me.

The wind, as I found out later, was blowing in 60mph gusts. The streets had turned into streams, 6 inches deep in some places, and what I couldn’t jump had to be waded through. Plus, the lightning was really, really close. I just hoped that it would hit the trees or buildings instead of my little umbrella. By the time I got into work I was soaked through everywhere below my shoulders and my shoes were filled with water. A co-worker who usually drives in said it looked like Mordor was invading. There was a definite line between where he was and the black, lightning filled clouds sweeping over the city. Other people had similar stories of nice mornings being suddenly interrupted by the unexpected storm.

Of course, we all knew it was supposed to rain today. In the afternoon. And it still is apparently, but the suddenness of this morning’s thunderstorm caught everyone off-guard. Plus, thunder? Before 2pm? It’s almost unheard of! And I’ve never seen it this early in the morning. Anyway, all this is to say that it’s been a very interesting day so far. Also, that my freezing cold office combined with my wet clothes is making me miserable. Lesson Learned: Keep a spare change of clothes at work, or at least a space heater.
