Chapter Four:
“Yah, it’s been four months, Seung. He’s not waking up,” Doojoon said, patting his friend’s back. “You’re the only one stopping him-”
“I’m the only one stopping him from dying,” Hyunseung snapped. He looked up at Doojoon with swollen eyes. “I’m the only one who hasn’t given up on him.”
Sighing, the eldest sat down in the vacant plastic chair beside the other. “Hyunseung, one of these days-”
“My Junnie will wake up.” He turned away, fresh tears welling in his eyes. “My Junnie has to wake up.”
“Hyung,” Kikwang whispered from his spot by the door. “I want him to wake up, too.” After receiving the warning look from Doojoon, he continued. “But I don’t think this is what he’d want.”
“Let’s go, hyung,” Yoseob pleaded, trying to tug Hyunseung from his chair. He batted away the younger, shaking his head. “Why not? You’ve been here for three days!”
“Keep your voice down, Seobbie,” Dongwoon hissed. “We are in a hospital.”
“I know, Dongwoon, but Hyunseung needs to leave for once!”
“I’m not leaving yet.” He rubbed his thumb over Junhyung’s hand in a circular motion. He smiled sadly. “Junnie, I won’t give up on you. So please, wake up soon.”
“He’s not waking up, Hyunseung. Let go already.” Doojoon ushered the three youngest out of the room before turning back to Hyunseung. “You have to let them pull the plug, Seung.”
“I’m not giving up on him, Doojoon. I know he’ll wake up.” Staring at the younger, Hyunseung let a few tears roll down his cheeks. “He has to.” After Doojoon left, Hyunseung kissed Junhyung’s forehead before sitting back down. He propped his arm up on the edge of the bed and rested his chin on it. Tracing a heart onto the younger’s hand, he smiled. “I’ll never give up on you.”

Two months later-
“Hyunseung, you aren’t focusing!” Doojoon snapped. “Just because Junhyung is still in a coma, doesn’t mean Beast can stop the performances.”
“It’s not the same without him,” Hyunseung squeaked. He was a few feet away, but Doojoon could easily chase him down.
“Stop worrying about him! He’s not going to wake up, so let go already!” He stormed out of the practice room, steam almost visible radiating off of him.
“Don’t worry too much, Hyunseung,” a trainee said, trying to be comforting.
“Thanks, Sang Kyu.” Hyunseung smiled before glaring at him. “No matter what the president says, you will never be able to replace Junhyung.” He walked away before hearing the other’s reply.
“Do you think he holds a grudge against me since my brother shot your friend?” He turned to Kikwang, his eyes sad and pleading.
“Oh, don’t worry, Sang Kyu! Hyunseung just hates your brother, not you!” Kikwang stated, trying to reassure the trainee. He patted the younger on his head before he followed after Hyunseung.
“The president wants him to sing Junhyung’s part?!” Kikwang halted at hearing Hyunseung’s voice dangerously close to snapping. He peered around the corner, seeing that Yoseob was talking to Hyunseung.
“Hyunseung, calm down. It’s not official or anything. It was only an idea!” Yoseob rambled, terrified at the elder’s tone. “It was just a suggestion really! Sang Kyu isn’t actually-”
“Shut up, Yoseob.” Hyunseung’s eyes narrowed. “If the president told you than it’s not just a suggestion. He wants Sang Kyu to take over Junhyung’s parts.”
“But, Seung!”
“No buts, Yoseob! The president obviously has given up on him, too. Am I the only one who hasn’t?” Hyunseung stalked away, heading for the front doors of CUBE.
“Yah, hyung! Where are you going?”
“I’m going to see Junhyung!” He left without another word.
After climbing out of the taxi and paying, he made his way through the sliding doors of the hospital. He greeted the receptionist with a smile before heading toward Junhyung’s room. Every day he came back to the too white walls and too clean rooms. And every day he would tell Junhyung about what happened. Today was no different.
“Hi, Junnie,” he said, entering the younger’s room and sitting in the chair. Before speaking, he bit his lip. “Junnie, I got angry at them again today. I don’t mean to, it just happens! None of them believe in you! Even the president is giving up!” Tears once again rolled down his cheeks. It was routine for the waterworks to start. “He even introduced a trainee that would become a member of Beast! He’s lost all faith in you!”
Hyunseung buried his head in the sheets and sobbed. He didn’t know how long he had cried, but when someone tapped him on the shoulder and caused him to look up, the sun was setting. He looked over to see Sang Kyu standing there.
“Hi,” Sang Kyu whispered. His eyes were locked on the floor. “Um, hyung, I’m not trying to replace your friend. I know I could never do that. But Beast is meant to be a six-member band and-”
“And Junhyung is the sixth member.” Hyunseung’s voice turned cold and steely at the mere mention of there being a Beast without the original members. “Without Junhyung, there will be no Beast. It’ll just be a lousy imitation.” He returned his gaze to Junhyung’s lifeless body, ignoring Sang Kyu’s presence. “I’ll never lose faith in you recovering, my Junnie. Please, wake up soon.”

Six months later-
As Hyunseung stood in the empty hospital room, angry tears staining his face, he knew what he had to do. Sang Ki being in prison for killing Junhyung wouldn’t be enough of a punishment. He walked out of the room and from the building with his eyes stony and shadowed. The former members of Beast had gone separate ways after he had made a scene two months ago at the debut of Sang Kyu.
He had caused a commotion stating that Sang Kyu would never be a member of Beast; that he would never show any signs of accepting him. Shortly afterwards, the president of CUBE disbanded Beast, saying that they were too overcome with the loss of one of their members that they couldn’t continue. It was only partially true. Only Hyunseung was grieving. He had shown up at the hospital as they wheeled Junhyung’s body from the room he had occupied for ten months. He had thrown a fit, profusely stating that it was unjust.
“I’ll make them all pay for turning their backs on you,” Hyunseung whispered, climbing into his car and driving toward the nearest member’s place of employment. “They finally gave up on you two months ago. They unplugged everything that was giving you life. I’ll get them for that.”
He noticed the customer’s of Dongwoon’s Diner staring at him as if he were a madman. He smiled at the irony of it. Their beloved diner owner would soon be dead. He halted at the counter, hitting the bell once for Dongwoon to walk out. When Dongwoon appeared, he smiled as if it were normal.
“Hyunseung!” Dongwoon said, grinning. He rounded the corner to hug his former band mate. “How’ve you been?” He looked over the elder’s appearance, noting all the things that were our of place. Shaggy hair, unkempt clothes, ratty shoes. “Hyung, are you okay?”
Smiling, Hyunseung hugged him. “I’m okay, Dongwoon.” When he pulled back, Dongwoon’s eyes widened and he gasped for air. “But you aren’t.” He was still smiling as he turned and left, blood staining his hands from when he stabbed Beast’s maknae in the chest. He vaguely heard people screaming as he drove away. “One down, five traitors to go.”
He pulled into the next member’s jobsite. Yoseob had become a well-known photographer for several magazines. Entering the building, Hyunseung was led down corridor after corridor, finally ending up at the room where the bubbly guy of Beast was working.
“Last frame, Kikwang!” Yoseob shouted at the man modeling. Hyunseung smiled at the sheer speed at which his plan was going. He had picked their deaths carefully.
“Yah! Do you guys have a few minutes to spare for an old friend?” he asked, shouting over from where he stood. Yoseob snapped the picture as soon as Kikwang’s face lit up at seeing Hyunseung.
“Hyung!” Kikwang squealed, running over to him. He hugged the elder tightly, tears forming in his eyes. “It’s good to see you! How have you been?”
“I’ve been doing well, actually. Still a little upset about…well, him…”
Yoseob frowned. “You still don’t say his name?” Shaking his head made the younger two realize his hair. “Whoa, Hyunseung. Your hair is longer.”
“And it’s curly!” Kikwang ruffled the elder’s hair, smiling at him. “How about we get some drinks and talk somewhere?”
“How about on the roof?” When they turned identical looks of confusion on him, he smiled a little. “I like being up high. It makes me feel closer to him, you know?”
Nodding, the three of them walked together to the rooftop. Hyunseung had bought them drinks from a vending machine and they laughed as they stood atop the building. After ten minutes, Kikwang finally noticed Hyunseung’s hands.
“Yah, hyung! Why are your hands red?”
“Hm?” Looking at his hands, he laughed. “Oh! I was painting and I got red paint all over me. I forgot to wash it off.” He walked closer to the edge, gaining identical warnings from the other two. “I wonder what would happen if I jumped…”
“You’d splatter on the ground!” Yoseob hurried over to him, grabbing his arm. “Yah, don’t go any closer, okay?” Ignoring the younger, Hyunseung walked to the very edge, seeming like he’d jump. “Yah, stop, Hyunseung!”
“Hyung, stop it!” Kikwang rushed over, grabbing onto Yoseob to try to help pull the elder away from the edge.
Smirking at their stupidity, Hyunseung spun around, easily throwing the two over the edge. “You’re both too stupid. Kikwang, I expected it from you, but not Yoseob.” He watched as his friends’ hurled toward the cement. Instead of cringing at the sight of their blood spilling over the off-white sidewalks, he smiled. “Three to go.”
He left through the back entrance, avoiding where his friends’ bodies lay heaped in pools of blood. He hurried to his car and sped toward his next victim. Smiling as he pulled into Doojoon’s driveway, he climbed out, carrying a baseball bat with him. He knocked on the door. Doojoon answered, smiling at him.
“Hyunseung!” Doojoon screeched. He pulled the younger into a tight hug. “Come in, come in!” After leading Hyunseung inside, the elder turned to walk toward the kitchen. “What brings you here?”
“Revenge…”
What do you mean revenge?” Doojoon laughed as he spun around. His eyes widened when the other lifted the baseball bat. “Seung, what are you-”
Hyunseung winced a little at the sight of Doojoon’s body falling limp. The blood pooling at his feet made his stomach lurch a little. He turned and bolted from the house. He ran around the side and vomited. “Why am I getting sick?” He hurried to his car and sped home. He went inside, locking the door behind him. He went to the closet in one of the spare rooms, pulling the door open to reveal two battered brothers.
“Let us go,” Sang Ki begged in a raspy voice. “At least let Sang Kyu go. He had nothing to do with it!” Hyunseung hit him across the face, silencing him.
“Not a chance, Sang Ki. You’ll both rot away in here.” He smirked. “If the fire doesn’t destroy you first.” He tied shredded cloths around their mouths, tightening the ropes at their wrists and ankles. “There will only be a small mound of ash here.” He poured gasoline over the two of them before spreading it around his house. He lit a match, throwing it into the gasoline. He got into his car, speeding away from his country home.
A few miles into Seoul, he stopped his car. He climbed out and gave his keys to a homeless man. “Go to this address. You’ll have a home there.” He handed a card with his Seoul address on it to him and walked down the sidewalk. On the news everywhere were bulletins of murders. Hearing the names of the Beast members made him smirk. “I’m the last one…” He walked to the cemetery where Junhyung was buried, following the twisting paths toward the marble stone. He noticed someone standing there.
“I still don’t know why Hyunseung made a scene. I wanted Sang Kyu to sing your parts to help them erase your voice. Sure he would never be as good as you, but he was good,” the president of CUBE stated as he placed a small bouquet of flowers in front of the stone. He turned at hearing someone approaching. Shocked to see that it was Hyunseung and that he had something clenched tightly in his hands. “Hyunseung-”
“Leave right now. You won’t be a suspect that way,” Hyunseung interrupted.
“What do you mean?”
He looked straight into the president’s eyes. “I murdered the members of Beast. And I killed Sang Ki and Sang Kyu.” Tears rolled down his face as he confessed it. He placed the barrel of the pistol to his temple, it shaking slightly. “I’m the last to die. I’ll be joining them.”
“You won’t be joining them, Hyunseung. Murderers and people who commit suicide don’t go where the innocent go.”
“I know.” More tears fell as he choked on his words. “I wasn’t referring to Beast. I’ll never see my Junhyung again.” His sobs echoed through the quiet cemetery as he spoke his goodbye. “I can never reach my Junhyung; can never embrace him. I killed my friends, my enemies. I murdered them all.”
“Hyunseung, put the gun down.” He reached out his hand. “Or give me the gun.”
“No.” After taking a shaky breath, Hyunseung smiled sadly. “I’ll be joining them now.”
“Who? You know you won’t go where Beast is, so who are you referring to?”
“Sang Ki and Sang Kyu.” After a few more tears escaped his eyes, he closed them. “I love you, Yong Junhyung. And I’m sorry I won’t be seeing you again…” He pulled the trigger.
The gunshot echoed for a minute, silencing the sobs that could once be heard. The president stood there, motionless, staring at the blood pooling around the last Beast member’s head. He dialed the police, ordering them to come. When they got there, they asked questions that he gladly answered.
After the joint funeral of the five Beast members and the two charred bodies of Sang Ki and Sang Kyu were found, the president of CUBE retired from his position. He never stated why, but those within the company knew the reason. He was the last to see Jang Hyunseung alive, and could have prevented his death. Knowing he’d be thrown in prison or executed for murdering the others, he let the boy leave this world the way he wanted to.
The guilt ate away at him, forcing him into an asylum. He would sit by his window, staring out of the glass regardless of the weather. Whenever a reporter would ask about what happened that day, now so many years ago, he would look at them and utter the same reply:

Everyone has skeletons in the closet…
