"And this is my parents' garden," Hermione continued, moving the odd group behind her out of her house and into the backyard. "My dad, er... well, he likes gnomes. Not magical gnomes, of course but-"
"They come to life, you know," Luna interrupted her.
"Excuse me?" Hermione blinked, looking from the stone statues to Luna, then back again. "They're made of stone. Of course they don't come to life."
"Oh, but they do. Muggle gnomes are the precursors to magical gnomes. They got so sick of being placed in gardens that they destroy the gardens of wizards."
Hermione spluttered, while Ron and Harry gave each other twin looks of exasperation. "Luna, they're made of STONE!" Hermione rubbed her temple, she should have known showing her friends her parents' home was a bad idea from the start.
"Of course they are," Luna agreed. "But during what the muggles call a 'Blue Moon,' the gnomes come to life. Just for the night. It's very sad for them, they only get a night of freedom 'once in a blue moon.' No wonder they're so bitter when they encounter the garden of a wizard." Luna looked off across the horizon. "It's why only a foolish wizard adorns his garden with anything. The gnomes destroy the decorations first, as retribution."
"Luna, that doesn't make any SENSE! It's not in a single history book or encyclopedia. Why would stone garden gnomes from the muggle world only bother magical gardens if they're so angry about being decorations?"
"It won't be in the history books, the entire story is too embarrassing for the Ministry of Magic. But I'm surprised you didn't read the series of articles on it The Quibbler published a few months ago."
"Luna, no one reads th-...." Hermione stopped herself and took a deep breath. Just because Luna was spacey and... well... LUNA really wasn't a reason to be rude to her. "...the papers over holiday,"  she finished lamely.
"Well, that's true... father did say subscription was going up by one the day I left for school. I wonder who the new customer is."
Hermione closed her eyes and swore to herself that the next time her parents begged her to bring some of her school friends home, she would just bring a couple of the castle elves.

Comments appreciated, but honestly I just felt like being weird. ^_~
