If Alfred could make some noise here, he would. His foot had been bouncing up and down throughout the entire speech, probably jolting the person next to him and irritating the person in front. He'd heard this once already. The words weren't completely the same, but he wasn't a scrawny little Freshman any longer (had he ever been scrawny? And, come to think of it, had he ever truly been a Freshman?), and he was ready to get this year started. He was ready to be in class. He was ready. He'd study the fuck out of his sessions this semester; he'd cut back on the partying (besides every Thursday, and the one he was planning for right after this dumbass ceremony); he would allow himself just one hangover per month.

And he was rooming with Yong Soo this year. Awesome. The guy was hard not to get along with, even if you got into a rowdy shouting match about 'made in China' tags. He spared barely a sympathetic thought for whoever would be on the rest of their floor. They'd all come in and party with him eventually; he'd see to that ( ... )

"Short attention spri-span," said Al, chewing his inner cheek. Having been on the tips of his toes, searching faces, he didn't see who'd spoken; he looked around for the source of the voice, but all that came into view was a rather annoyed-looking boy. Kid looked kinda young... was he meant to be here? Alfred liked his little hairpin, though. Good taste. Maybe he didn't know that the cross had flipped upside-down.
He grinned in a friendly way, sizing the little guy up. He couldn’t be more than a freshman, could he? Maybe he was one of those whiz kids that got into college way early because they could run around the other students three times without even tripping over a desk.

…Al’s metaphors needed work.

Frickin’ geniuses. He was already figuring out how to ask this dude for study help. Once they became friends, that is, but that wouldn’t take long. He’d have to introduce him to tons of people, and he was looking forward to it-maybe they’d have a class together-oh, he should probably say something.

“You new here?”

“Hey, really? Second? That’s me too.” Alfred thinks for a moment. Had he seen this guy in any of his classes? The lectures were fuggin’ huge, it was true… he might’ve sat in front of him (when he wasn’t asleep in the back)… huh, maybe not. He looked as bored as Alfred had been, which was a good sign-indicative to Having Something in Common. He tried his “souls in misery together” expression, which was more of a grimace than a smile, and stuck his hands in his pockets, turning half-way to show that he was ready to walk on and find a good spot for them to sit. With luck, this picnic would have some good food… he could feel his stomach rumbling already. Hot dogs… burgers… pizza, maybe? Bags of chips… pickles and mustard and ketchup and relish to put on the hot dogs or burgers (or pizza, maybe?)… Coke ( ... )

“Norway? Cool,” Al said, eyeing him. He’d probably have said something like Dutch, had he been forced to guess. He hadn’t ever met anyone from Norway before, but when he was small his mom had read him stories ( ... )

I own the book he was talking about XD arfled November 12 2009, 22:10:29 UTC
No, Al didn’t have any idea of what Haakon was thinking. He assumed it was something along the lines of what was going through his own mind. Don’t be offended; he doesn’t know how stupid he is-just how stupid other people think he is. As for that troll… no, he couldn’t feel that either; he was, quite honestly, used to Arthur talking about various ghosts, fairies, and unicorns, and if you even told him, he’d pass it off with a laugh. Alfred’s skeptical about this sort of stuff, even though he does like reading about it in books (Harry Potter being a personal favorite); having grown up in a household where Santa Claus was the last supernatural thing he was wont to believe in, he’s more inclined to go for science and archaeological findings than things like that. But if you see trolls, that’s cool ( ... )

Al was pretty lucky when it came to security. Due to his wide array of acquaintances, he could probably slip out of any situation and head to another person’s dorm-not tonight, of course, he’d take responsibility for all the awesome that was to go down-and the campus police sort of knew him, so he was all right with them. Since a few of his friends were well over 21, he could get them to store… whatever it was that he couldn’t store in his own dorm room. All of this plus a natural talent for getting out of tight situations was handy when it came to this campus. He liked to pride himself on stuff like that. People skills, you know, when book-smarts aren’t as available ( ... )

Hey! Looked like this guy was actually interested in coming! That was another success-not a notch in his notebook, because Alfred didn’t do things like that, but another possible person to wave at in the halls or annoy for the notes he’d missed. He still had to find out if they shared any classes. If they didn’t, there was always the next semester.
He hoped what he had would live up to expectations. Personally, he liked American beer, but that was only because he hadn’t been constantly exposed to something of better quality. Nothing wrong with a good standard American lager, in his opinion. Francis refused to house anything like Pabst Blue Ribbon, so he went along with his somewhat snobby guidance.

“Huh… it should be around eight, I guess. This picnic thing is open until then. You know your way around campus, right?” Alfred asked, forgetting for a moment that this young man was the same year as he.

Okay, well. That was weird. People had treated him like that before, so Al was able to brush it off with a shrug and look for someone else to talk to. And if this Willoch guy had said he’d be there-or hinted, at least-that was pretty much a good thing. Maybe he’d tell his friends to come with him, even if it was so he wouldn’t have to stick around talking to Alfred’s friends. He wondered, for a minute, whether Haakon did have any people he wasn’t this rude and cold to. Hmm, it was kind of impossible to be here and not have friends… at least, that’s what Alfred thinks, never having been in a situation where he was lonely for long.

Ehh, he’d have to tell Yong Soo that there’d be more people attending than they’d originally planned. It was usually the case, anyway.
