Doctor Who, 15 recs, Various pairings

Oct 30, 2015 21:11

I'm afraid I fell off the wagon with the trope squares, so in order to get some recs in, get a bingo, and not spam anyone, here's a giant tropey list of Doctor Who recs with various pairings across the show's fifty years.

Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Pairing: Missy/Twelfth Doctor
Title: Love/Hate
Author: Nostalgia
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/Only_One_Bed/works/3724345
Rating/Warning(s): Teen | Possibly dub-con (par for the pairing)
Word Count/WIP?: 3552
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Missy blackmails the Doctor into a romantic holiday and it's not even a good one. And yet somehow the Doctor enjoys it more than he cares to admit. It's funny, sharp, and the voices are spot on. ("A drink for my... annoying woman in black, please.")

Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Pairing: Twelfth Doctor/Missy
Title: Cheek to Cheek
Author: irishvampire13

Rating/Warning(s): All ages | None
Word Count/WIP?: 828

Why This Must Be Read: Gorgeous ficlet of the two of them dancing and playing mind games, as ever.

(Both for trope square "Mind Games")

Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Pairing: Clara Oswald/Twelfth Doctor
Title: About Last Night...
Author: Kittenmommy
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=55742
Rating/Warning(s): Teen | (Despite the apparent tropes, however, not non-con)
Word Count/WIP?: 5876
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Clara and the Doctor keep waking up in bed together with no memory of how it happened, but with a pretty good idea of just what must have gone on... It's a tropey set-up, but played out with depth and heart as Clara and the Doctor negotiate the desires that lie under their friendship.

(For trope square "Friends to lovers")

Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Pairing: Clara Oswald/Twelfth Doctor
Title: The Noise
Author: Nostalgia
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=57321
Rating/Warning(s): Teen | None
Word Count/WIP?: 2639
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: The TARDIS breaks, which means the Doctor has to stay in Clara's flat until morning - and in her bed. Great voices, lots of fun, and the TARDIS wins out, the way she does.

(For trope square "Sharing a Bed")

Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Pairing: Emma Grayling/Alec Palmer
Title: my lantern burns serene
Author: seren_ccd
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/2072544?view_adult=true
Rating/Warning(s): None (PG) | None
Word Count/WIP?: 8205
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: These two guest characters from Hide were immediately appealing and shippable, and it's lovely to find that someone's written such a beautiful piece for them.

(For trope square "Slow burn")

Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Pairing: Martha Jones/Tenth Doctor
Title: Regency Romance
Author: AND
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=33017
Rating/Warning(s): All ages | None
Word Count/WIP?: 180
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Delightful tiny gem, with the Doctor and Martha playing at dressing up in the correct Regency outfit. Almacks might not be on the menu, after all...

(For trope square "Role Playing")

Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Pairing: Jackie Tyler/Tenth Doctor
Title: *hic*
Author: nonelvis
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/3396551
Rating/Warning(s): Teen | Dub Con (as per the trope)
Word Count/WIP?: 3099
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Jackie and the Doctor keep waking up in bed together in varying states of undress and there seems to be only one solution... Everything about this is just brilliant, from Ten's motormouth technobabbling to Jackie's practicality and loyalty to Rose and the Doctor getting to reassess his opinion of this particular human. It's sure to have you grinning throughout.

(For trope square "Shag or Die")

Fandom: Doctor Who (BFAs)
Pairing: Lucie Miller/Eighth Doctor
Title: Four Times Lucie Miller Tried to Seduce the Doctor, and One Time She Didn't Have To
Author: wshaffer_fic
Link: http://wshaffer-fic.livejournal.com/943.html
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13 | None
Word Count/WIP?: 1482
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: It's a joy from start to finish. Lucie sets out to give the Doctor a hint, but sometimes it's difficult to get the message through to an alien. There's no pining, just lots of humor and a splendid take on Lucie and Eight.

(For trope square "Non Human lovers")

Fandom: Doctor Who (BFAs)
Pairing: Charley Pollard/Eighth Doctor
Title: Love Me (Love Me Not)
Author: laughinggas13
Link: http://laughinggas13.livejournal.com/103540.html
Rating/Warning(s): G | None
Word Count/WIP?: 962
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Charley and the Doctor have a difficult conversation and Charley acknowledges two painful truths. The author's got a wonderful handle on them and deals with the friendship vs unrequited love with sensitivity but not sentimentality.

(For trope square "Pining")

Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Pairing: Peri Brown/Sixth Doctor
Title: Strain
Author: Golden Orange
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=31353
Rating/Warning(s): Teen| None
Word Count/WIP?: 1312
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Peri and Six do the sex pollen trope and it's laugh out loud funny - but not without some genuine UST underneath, too.

Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Pairing: Peri Brown/Sixth Doctor
Title: Pollination
Author: Lissy Strata
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=51285
Rating/Warning(s): All ages | None
Word Count/WIP?: 1371
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Peri/Six and not just subverting a trope but killing it dead seems to have become a thing in Classic Who fandom. So while this isn't technically shippy, I can't resist adding it as a companion piece - this is the other time Peri and Six did the sex pollen trope - as nobody else ever could.

(Both for trope square "Sex Pollen")

Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)/Chalet School series
Pairing: Sarah Jane Smith/Harry Sullivan
Title: Sarah Jane of the Chalet School
Author: Paranoidangel
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=23045
Rating/Warning(s): All ages | None
Word Count/WIP?: 26,065
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: It's one of those fandom AUs that can be read even if you don't know the other fandom - or even Harry and Sarah. Harry and Sarah are transposed to the Chalet School in Austria in the 1930s, Sarah as a teacher and Harry as a doctor and a bittersweet romance plays out between them.

(For trope square "High School AU")

Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Pairing: Sarah Jane Smith/Harry Sullivan
Title: The First Time
Author: Rivendellrose
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=26427
Rating/Warning(s): All ages | None (some mild mentions of injury)
Word Count/WIP?: 1272
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Harry finds an unusual way of getting Sarah through a difficult patch. This has the full 'aww' factor, plus some of their usual banter and some hurt/comfort thrown in. What particular 'first time' this is, you'll have to read to find out, however...

(For trope square "First Time(s))

Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Pairing: Liz Shaw/Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart
Title: An Unexpected Education
Author: Sleepy Sheep683
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=16021
Rating/Warning(s): All Ages/PG | None (mentions of infidelity)
Word Count/WIP?: 11,930
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Brig/Liz is one of my favourite Whoniverse pairings and this is one of my favourite fics for them. The author writes around and into the corners of Season 7 (old Skool s7!), exploring Liz's emotions as she acknowledges an unwilling attraction to the Brigadier (currently her employer).

(For trope square "Screwing the Chain of Command")

Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Pairing: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton
Title: An Unearthly Child - Jane Austen Style!
Author: Meadowlark
Link: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=58027
Rating/Warning(s): All ages | None
Word Count/WIP?: 2779
Recced on LiveJournal By: lost_spook

Why This Must Be Read: Meadowlark here beautifully transplants the events of Doctor Who's very first episode into the style of Jane Austen as Miss Wright and Mr Chesterton navigate a romance and investigate the mystery of Susan Foreman and her grandfather. It's a lovely piece of work and accessible even if you're unfortunate enough not to have yet viewed the real "Unearthly Child" episode.

(For trope square "Alternative Time Period AU")

Dear mods, I do hope this is all okay! (And I haven't even managed a bingo yet...) I'm afraid some more pairing tags are needed - Missy/The Doctor, Emma Grayling/Alec Palmer, Jackie Tyler/The Doctor, Liz Shaw/Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Lucie Miller/The Doctor, Peri Brown/The Doctor. Thanks!
