Sunday, Momoko's Back Yard, El Paso Texas

Dec 07, 2014 01:32

The weather was fine, mid-60s with no rain and a slight breeze. The backyard at Mrs Wilson's was big enough, though, that Momoko had set up a tent in case anyone from the colder climates decided that it was too warm. The rest of the yard was decorated in banners and streamers and balloons. Mostly green, though there was some pink sneaking through ( Read more... )

Sitting on the table was a stuffed lamb. Named Truffle. From Barney's.

Tied around its neck with a neat bow was a card that read:

Karla and Warren,
Congratulations. My gift to you both is an ultrasound and MRI I've arranged for, at your convenience.

My gift to the child, when it comes time, will be healthy and fresh baby food delivered in batches.

I will let the three of you fight over the plush toy.

With affection,

Hannibal

"Truffle is mine!" Karla declared, after reading the card. She reached over and hugged the plushy lamb tightly, her fingers sinking into the soft fabric. She held the card up so Warren could read it, trying not to bounce. "When can we schedule the ultrasound? How soon?"

"Whenever you like," Hannibal answered. "As soon as tomorrow, or any time in the next weeks. Although remember there are holidays coming up there, so certain days might require a bit more notice than others."

"Winsol is coming up for us, too," Karla said. "Are you busy this coming week? I know it's finals, but I'm not sure how much preparation you need for your class?"

Karla's own final was going to be very simple, so she wasn't concerned about her own.

"For my final, my students cook for me," Hannibal answered, grinning. "I've got the ingredients in already, so my preparation is complete. And I've no other plans so far, save for working on a syllabus for next semester."

"Ooh, you know what? This finally might be our chance to talk herbs and things. Because my next semester's class will be all about plants. Plants that are useful to humans in different ways."

So...mostly poisons. Just as soon as she came up with a way to convince the administration that they wanted to let her teach a class on how to poison people.

"Planning your own class this time, then?" Hannibal nodded. "I look forward to it."

Let's be real - the administration okayed Pam and Cheryl's classes. Poisoning was tame by comparison.

Truth!

Honestly, it was mostly Warren and Jono she was worried about. They'd both take a class called 'How to Murder People with Plants' a little personally. While Karla saw it as a little more proof that the future where Audric existed wasn't too far off from reality.

"It is a novel concept," she agreed. "But I found I really enjoyed teaching my class this semester and it didn't take that much time away from my duties back home. Plus, I'm guaranteed two infant-free hour every fortnight that way, which will no doubt keep me sane."

"Or crazy with worry until you're home again," Hannibal pointed out.

"If I can't trust Warren with the baby for a two hour span of time, I've chosen the wrong male to sire my children," Karla countered.

Warren might feel proud of that trust, if she hadn't immediately followed it up with, "Besides, Jono will almost certainly hover to ensure the baby is in good hands, and Raven will hover more, just in case."

...Sure, this all sounded logical now. Just wait, Karla. Just wait.

"Such logic rarely outweighs the mass of parental protectiveness," Hannibal noted. He may not have been a father himself, but he'd known - and treated - plenty of parents.

Karla's own parents had seemed perfectly content with that logic, but Karla wasn't going to bring that up now. Didn't really seem party-appropriate and she was Black Widow enough to be cognizant of her own abandonment issues.

"Well, if I start getting too worried, I'll just make sure Warren or Jono has the baby on the island so I can summon them at need," Karla decided. Because having the baby on the island was a brilliant idea. "Then I can head into Baltimore and militantly breastfeed in public places on days when I'm feeling extra-feisty."

Hannibal chuckled. "Bring a camera. And whoever has the baby is welcome to visit; I can feed...well, Warren, at least." He could share with Jono. And keep formula or pumped milk or whatever in his refrigerator for the baby.

This was getting to be quite involved for someone who wasn't babysitting, wasn't it?

Momoko had one of the BEST presents ever to give, and she had waited long enough. Whether it was time or not, she was bringing it out now.

Not that it was sure it wanted to come out of the kitchen it had been standing in. And not that it wanted to be wearing the big green bow that Momoko had attached to his shirt. Momoko had to drag it out into the yard...

Junior still wasn't terribly convinced that the bow was entirely necessary, Momoko. Or that he needed to have quite the dramatic entrance arranged. He would have been just as happy with being a surprise guest, after all.

Still, he couldn't help but look tentatively hopeful that maybe this would go well. And if not... he could always go back into the kitchen he'd been standing in, and resume being no bother to anybody at all.
