Doctor Who Meme: Day 1.

Oct 07, 2010 18:07

So I did some searching, and I found a 30-day Doctor Who meme.  I swear I'll finish this one.  I thought of doing the 30-day music meme, but my musical taste is so eclectic that I could never choose.  Doctor Who is so much easier to have opinions about.

Thankfully, this is fairly New!Who centric.  It's not that I don't like Classic!Who, but I've mostly only been able to find a couple of episodes and many short clips, so I'm not as familiar with it.

Day 30 - Why Do YOU Love Doctor Who

IT'S A TIE!!!  Sorry, meme.  It won't happen again.

THE NINTH DOCTOR (CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON)

Yeah, big surprise there.  I love him because he's so mysterious and complex, and he genuinely seems like he's 900 years old.  He's angsty but he doesn't wallow, unlike some other people I could name.  He's so obviously the Doctor, and yet he's also unique: he has a "street smart" quality (reflected in the leather jacket) that the other Doctors just don't have.  I personally think he has the lowest bullshit-tolerance level of all of the Doctors---calling out Van Statten, leaving Adam behind after he fucks it up, getting Jackie to calm down in "Father's Day", his initial treatment of Captain Jack, and how pissed off he gets with the Game Station's staff's "just following orders" excuse.  That's another thing I love about him.  The other Doctors tolerate it for a while, and then snap, but he get a sample, and then basically goes, "Yeah, NO.  Shut it."

I hate that Nine gets written off as the "moody, sad" one because he is clearly meant to be a broken man who is trying to heal and move on, and it's clearly very difficult.  He's a war veteran.  That's what war veterans do, and it's never quick or simple.  Just because he has angst and trauma does not mean that he's not capable of happy moments, too---think of all of the Nine/Rose hand-holding, their hugs...and how many times did we hear that contagious laugh and see that infectious smile?  More than once, that's for sure.  I just feel like he's underrated because David Tennant came in right after him and played up the "life-long fanboy" card.

No, I don't hate Ten.  I just feel like he gets a little too overrated at times.

Which brings me to my other pick...

THE ELEVENTH DOCTOR (MATT SMITH)

Thank God, a picture that isn't of him standing next to the TARDIS on a beach or looking like Edward Cullen.

I love him.  Matt Smith plays the "old man in a young man's body" very well, and it really helps give Eleven a uniqueness as the "youngest" Doctor.  Eleven has the best of Nine and Ten in him, but he also has this "adorkable" quality to him, like how he thinks he's so hip when he's so nerdy.  He also seems like the friendliest Doctor to me, and the best with children.  He has this sweet understanding of people, and I think he might be more compassionate than Nine and Ten.  Possibly.  There's really only so much I can say about him because his "song" is far from over.

I'll admit, when I saw those first pictures of him standing with the TARDIS, I thought, "That's not the Doctor!  They picked an Edward Cullen reject!  I can't watch this show now!"  But then I watched the Doctor Who: Confidential interview with him, and I was a little relieved.  But then I freaked out about his outfit.  I just kept worrying and worrying.  Then, finally, he showed up.  While I was still very sad because Ten's was technically my first official regeneration (Nine had already regenerated when I discovered the show), Eleven immediately won me over as he took stock of all his body parts.  Then I saw the trailer and wanted his episodes right that minute.  There really was nothing to worry about.
