Ever since The Grumpy Plushie moved out, I've been thinking about getting kittens. (I have reason to believe that Toby and Theo will be fairly chill about kittens.) So last weekend, I went to visit some kittens being fostered by a member of the local humane society.
There were several very cute kittens, but I wasn't 100% sure that they were meant to be MY kittens. So I went back again yesterday to hang out with them some more, and two of them -- a pair of littermates -- decided that I belong to them.
And so this morning I drove to a farmhouse outside of town to retrieve the newest members of the household.
This is the one action shot I got that didn't come out blurry, go figure. All the other photos had to wait until they'd worn themselves out.
This is Niko. She looks like an anime kitten: enormous eyes and ears, very defined lines around her eyes and nose. She is unusually fastidious.
This is Nyssa. She is an accomplished player of glitterball soccer.
Eventually they fell asleep at the same time.
They are busy and bouncy and pouncy and fond of snuggles. Niko likes leaping onto shoulders. Nyssa likes bonking foreheads. They both *love* climbing things (I see a LOT of kittenproofing of the house in my future). They both have purrs much larger than one would expect, and they are sympathy purr-ers: when I cuddle one of them and she starts to purr, the other one starts purring right along with her. Niko's purr does not have a fully-functional off switch: she goes on purring long after she has fallen deeply asleep. (Toby is the same way, and so was The Big Kitty.)
It will be several more days before they officially meet Toby and Theo. However, we had a very brief interaction earlier this evening. Theo was curious about the noises coming from the room where the kittens are currently in isolation, so I opened the door about an inch.
Theo: Hi! I'm Theo! Who's in there?
Niko: *I* am in here! I am Niko, ferocious warrior!
Theo: You're so tiny! Biped, look how tiny!
Niko: I am FEROCIOUS! I hiss at you like the ferocious warrior I am!
Theo [scrambling backwards]: BIPED, THERE IS A MONSTER IN THERE.
h.l: Um.
Theo: I MUST FLEE IN TERROR FROM THE SCARY MONSTER!
Only time will tell how the intergenerational relationships will progress. However, given the kittens' fondness for snuggling, I strongly suspect that Toby, at least, is going to be very pleased with the new additions.
