Last night's post was (justifiably I hope) all about me. Heh. What I didn't mention was that after the defense proper all sorts of other good things began to happen (and show no signs of letting up any time soon).
I ran into a good friend on the floor of the building where the defense was held, and we walked over to the student union where
truepenny and
matociquala were waiting for us, ready for ice cream. The grrrly girl actually bought me ice cream (a scoop of cookies 'n' cream and a scoop of chocolate peanut butter in a waffle cone), and later
faith_delivers showed up and bought me a root beer. Three other friends from the department stopped by as well, and Mirrorthaw came by after work.
truepenny got me a cow creamer with a note inside: "Do you believe you alone have the power to silence the cow creamer?" To which a Wonderfalls fan can only reply, "It was never not silent!" or possibly "Have a pancake."
And today
renenet and
coffee_and_ink are coming to town, and we're going down to Chicago to see Serenity, and then there's Wiscon, and, and, and... Whee!
I said a short version of this last night but it's worth saying again with more detail: I am so grateful to everybody who reads this LJ who has posted supportive, excited, or funny comments about my academic enthusiasms and misadventures and successes over the past few years, or who has sent kind and thoughtful e-mails at critical moments, or who has recruited random passersby to wish me luck, or who has expressed interest in reading the dissertation, or who has otherwise gone above and beyond the call of blog-reading. This LJ was never intended to be academically-oriented, although of course that's a big part of my life and I always knew it would crop up from time to time; but with this hurdle jumped and the finish line in sight, I'm hoping to be able to get back to my previous mix of fannish and vid-related content, paeans to my farmers' markets, non-academic musings about books and music, and random observations about my little world - which is much larger for having you all in it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Observation for the day: if one puts enough Spike It!™ hair cement in one's hair, even eight hours of sleep is powerless against it.
Second observation for the day: dude, I think I need to go wash my hair.
