An East River walk named for some guy I've never heard of

It's healthy to do a lot of walking the day after the marathon. They say it loosens up your muscles. So on Monday, I checked out the John Finley Walk, an elevated walkway adjacent to the FDR Drive along the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

It did kind of work--the walking helped with my post-marathon stiffness--but I still have no idea who John Finley was.

The John Finley Walk, the waterfront portion of Carl Schurz Park, runs between approximately East 81st Street and East 90th Street, and is accessible from East End Avenue.

New York City's official bird, the pigeon, takes in the view of the Triboro Bridge and picturesque Long Island City, Queens on an overcast day.

A cool dock at the end of the walk.

That bridge--believe it or not, a bridge I never saw before--is the bridge to Randall's Island, home to a huge athletic field and overhyped, overcrowded summer festival concerts like the Warped Tour.

Looking southbound at the end of the walk, I found a rather dramatic tunnel.

The little lighthouse that could.

While doing this half-mile-or-so walk, I kept mentally confusing John Finley with Johnnie Walker, the famous whiskey maker. But who knows? Maybe John Finley was just some random drunk who happened to have some powerful friends at the New York City Parks Department.
