15x01 Back and to the Future

I'm still alive!

Let's do this, but old fashioned style where I mostly give overview thoughts. It's been three years since I watched these episodes, so this will be interesting... my memory is fuzzier than when I usually would have done my rewatches just a few months after the end of the season.

It's the one time I need the recap.

Starting in Jack's dead eyes while The Road So Far music is still playing, and everyone is in the middle of a zombie battle, is really effective. Definitely a taste of what I loved about Supernatural.

It's the small things that show Jack was beloved - like Castiel picking up his dead body to escape the zombie horde, even though he is very much dead.

Clothes - The same as previous episode by necessity.

Alex is a good actor, and I like the fact that he got to play someone other character besides Jack for a little bit.

Dean not caring about the demon "defiling Jack's corpse" is actually in character - given that Castiel is also riding around in someone's corpse and has been for years, and they both know it. Cas having a problem with a demon in Jack's corpse is actually a LITTLE BIT hypocritical.

Whenever you don't know how to write yourself out of a corner, try MAGIC SPELL!

The apocalypse being all the Winchester's day-to-day work being undone is pretty cool though... like, incremental improvements really do save the world!

The ghosts behind weirdly DIFFERENT with DIFFERENT manifestations then when they were first killed is just a giant FU to continuity that I got used to in the Carver/Dabb eras.

Them coming across the Woman in White first is awesome though and a nice call back to the Pilot.

I mean, in fairness to Cas, that is his SON'S CORPSE. So, I'm not saying that him being upset isn't understandable - I guess it gives him insight into how Claire feels whenever she looks at him.

Oh yeah, magic gun!

Dean admitting to Belphegor that Jack was "our kid" pleases me though - it's very, ironically, "jumping the shark" but I actually love when people in shows become fathers after the show has been on for while - ESPECIALLY if it's a weird situation where they adopt a troubled teen. So Jack was right up my ally, along with my childhood love of shows like My 2 Dads and Full House where kids ONLY had fathers. I was raised by a single mother, so it doesn't take a genius to see where the love for those particular shows came from.

Corpses corpses everywhere and not a soul to save.

And of course Sam has to fight the clown. Rare Cas save!

I forgot about Belphegor randomly bringing up Dean's torturing days... kind of out of left field and I don't think it goes anywhere or does anything? I guess they were trying to make AS MANY REFERENCES to the long story of Sam and Dean.

Oh yeah! I forgot about Sam's shoulder wound! I had hoped that they would have done more with that.

I mean, the humour is in the convenience of it. Need a heart - Sheriff killed by Woman in White, no blood on their hands, happy happenstance!

Belphegor sure detached those arteries quickly.

Sam takes off his jacket in favour of an FBI jacket when they get to town - just noting that down for the clothing catalogue, because I forgot to take screenshots. Oh, Dean did too.

I should have taken screenshots really. I'll go back and do it.

Supernatural really lost it's sense of "if you can't do something well, do it off screen" rule.

The brother moments are still the best part!

It's nice that they tied it back to the Free Will illusion/quest.

If all Sam and Dean did was buy people time, I still think that worth their time.

Sam believing that Chuck bailed would be a good outcome. I DO love the plot to kill God - I LOVED that line from Dean in S5 and I always wanted him to follow through on that threat - so I'm super glad they went there.

(also they seem to have finally forced me into the new entry draft system on LJ, which means that I have no idea how to do any fancy formatting... such as UNDERLINING THINGS. Very annoying.)
