Chapter 12
He opened his phone with a small clicking noise and held it up to his ear. “Hi.” his voice was much steadier than he thought it would be. Right then, when he was over the first wave of chock and all the emotions crashing together he felt mostly frustrated. He was furious at this stupid world for making this happen, but even more angry with himself for being so damn weak, for not being able to handle his feelings better. And he was scared, so scared. Kouki stood by his side, clueless on what was going on.
“Hey.” Tomo sounded relieved through the phone. “Are you okay? Yuh called me after you left.”
Rui’s heart ached, the other was worried, he could hear it. “I’m so sorry.” he said quietly, not really knowing what else to say.
“Sorry for what? Where are you?”
Rui’s eyes widened a bit, Yuh hadn’t told him anything? Of course he hadn’t… “I randomly met Kouki at the train, I’m at his place.” he said, then his emotions threatened to take over. “Tomo, I’ve done something terrible, I’ve really messed up, I- I’ve-” but words failed him, the big lump in his throat making it impossible to talk and his eyes filled up with un-spilled tears. Kouki had sat down next to him and put his arm around his slightly shivering shoulders and gave him a gentle squeeze before he slowly stroke it up and down his back.
“Rui, whatever happened it’s going to be okay, I promise.” he heard the vocalist say on the other side of the line, although he had no idea how it all would be okay. “Now, can you tell me where you are or give the phone to Kouki.”
After a few seconds he handed over the phone in silence, he heard Kouki talk but it was muffled by the rushing of his heart, which seemed deafening in his ears. A flesh wound in his heart and soul had been slit open, a wound that had never really healed, a wound that he had been desperately tried to mend, to repair but had never been able to, not completely. Now it hurt, it bled without any mercy. He felt hands on his back, he heard words, but the world had turned into some kind of blur.
Tomo had rushed as much he could without being illegal to get there as soon as possible. A million questions were flying around in his mind. When he got there he knocked the door gently and it didn’t take long before Kouki opened. To this moment he had thought that Umi was the only person he knew that could look as concerned and tender as the considerably taller blonde looked when he greeted him.
He was invited inside, and then he got confused as Kouki put his shoes and jacket on. “I’ll just go to the store and give you some privacy. I need to buy some stuff anyway, I’ll be back in twenty minutes or so. If you want to leave before that just close the door, it’s locked.”
Tomo looked up at him with bewilderment in his eyes. “Kou, you don’t have to go through so much trouble, I-”
“Tomo, stop.” he interrupted before he could say anything else. “Like I said, I’m going anyway. If I thought it was trouble I wouldn’t be suggesting it, right?” he said and gave him a gentle pat on the shoulder. “Seriously, it’s okay.” he said firmly when Tomo still didn’t look fully convinced. “If you steal anything I know who took it.”
Finally Tomo exhaled an amused huff and gently slapped his upper arm. “I’ll try keeping my fingers away then.” he said as he started to take off his jacket and shoes. “Thank you.” he said finally and received a gentle smile. They said goodbye and Tomo walked to the living room. It was a strange feeling, at the same time as everything was unfamiliar and new, he could still feel a Kouki vibe in the small apartment. It was bright, well cleaned and fairly fashionable. If he wouldn’t have been so focused on one thing only, which was Rui, he would have been more curious about the surroundings. He spotted the bassist on the white couch and a painful stab of worry and uneasiness was felt in his heart.
“I’m so sorry.” a weak whisper left Rui’s pale lips as he looked up at him. “I’m so sorry. I’m sorry.”
“Shh.” the vocalist hushed as he walked up to him. He reached out a hand and stroke over the awfully pale cheek before he sat down on his knees in front of him, the bent down head almost connected with his own. He put his hands on top of the shaking legs and the other immediately put his own hands on top of them, squeezing them hard. “Talk to me.” Tomo spoke out gently. He had never seen him this devastated before. “Talk to me sweetheart.”
“There..” he went silent and didn’t really know where to start. “I didn’t want- I wasn’t, I shouldn’t have let it happen, but I- I just let it- I just- I just let him-” he struggled to pronounce every sound, one last desperate try from his chaotic conscious to shield itself from the pain. He was disgusted with himself, and it hurt, it hurts, it hurts so much… make it stop… “Please.” he breathed out and lowered his head until their foreheads met. “Make i-it s-stop.” he stuttered on his ragged breathing.
The first time their lips met was gentle. Tomo barely touched the parted lips that desperately tried to suck in air in the even more shallow breathing than before. He then stroke his lips over the pale cheek, pressing down just beside his now trembling lips. Rui leaned into his every movement as he placed more kisses on his temples, forehead and cheeks and his hands tightened their grip some when his travelled down to his jaw line, down to his neck. The vocalist’s movements were careful and soft; he was alert for any signal the younger gave him to stop but it didn’t come.
“What happened?” Tomo asked him and he kissed his parted lips then, still careful but more firm this time. Rui’s breathing was still shallow, but much calmer now and his whole body relaxed more. He inhaled deeply through his nose as he answered the kiss, drawing a sweet sound from within his hurting chest.
“I’m cursed.” he whispered quietly after they parted. He had told Umi this, he had known right from the start he would ruin this, that he would hurt him, that he would cause only damage. Destruct. Ruin. Fall apart. Tomo kept placing kisses on his face and he leaned his head back to inhale a couple of deep breaths, which were used by the other who kissed his way down to his sensitive neck again, kissing his way along from one side to the other.
“How?” he asked, but he didn’t get a reply though; the younger shut his eyes harder, as if he could somehow shield himself from it all if he could just close his eyes tight enough. He was strangely calm and passive even though he was so upset. A state Tomo hadn’t seen ever before and he didn’t know if it was better or worse than before.
“I was sneaking out to meet him. I wasn’t allowed to meet him, not after she…” he took a deep breath. “All that time, all those years… I was nothing to him, nothing. My mom wouldn’t let me see him, one night when I came home late she stood and waited for me… and she said so many things about him. Right there it was enough.. I couldn’t take it.” the bassist inhaled a deep, shaky breath. “I just couldn’t stand her talking about him that way. There was no way I would stop meeting him either.”
“Kazuo?” Tomo asked carefully, not really following at all.
“No.” Rui said and shook his head, leaving Tomo totally lost. “Shin.”
“Who’s Shin?” he asked, just as carefully. “The guy you met today?”
To that, Rui nodded. “Shin is Kazuo’s grandson. We were introduced when I was around twelve years or something and he’s three years older than me. He became the first best friend I ever had. We spent all the time we could together but we didn’t go to the same schools so it was quite hard sometimes.” Rui paused and Tomo waited. “When we got older our relationship… changed. We had always had this bond and as we grew older it just- it just evolved and…” Rui’s words seemed to fail him, but it was pretty clear to the vocalist what he was trying to say. “He was- he… I loved him.” Wrong. Lies, and he knew it. Loved? You still love him. He heard his inner voice screaming.
Tomo continued stroking his hair, but he was a bit taken aback. To suddenly get information that immense from someone you at least thought you knew very well felt a bit… odd. But then again, he would never blame the other. “What happened then?”
“Kazuo owned a bookstore I regularly visited ever since I was about nine or ten. The apartment I have now Kazuo gave to me almost six years ago when mom kicked me out, until I started to have a regular income he let me help out in another bookstore he owned after school. He helped me, took care of me and… saved me. I was really lucky.” He also told him exactly what had happened that night. How his mother had went in to his room and fussed around, then came back out and handed him two suitcases. He hadn’t looked up once, he just took the bags. And he left. He told Tomo how he had searched for support in the one place he felt safe, with Shin, but how he got rejected, and that he heard some girl in the background. He told him how stupid he had been, how foolish it was of him to believe that Shin actually cared.
“Wait.” Tomo was so stunned it took a while before he could speak. “Your mom kicked you out?” he said with stunned disbelief tainting his words. “Rui why on earth haven’t you told me about this?”
Rui continued to look down. “I’ve moved on, I don’t really ever want to talk about it…” Lies, and he knew it. Liar.
“You’re serious?” Tomo exhaled a disbelieving huff. “How can you move on from something like that without even talk about it? Have you talked about it with someone else?”
“Not really” he mumbled. “Umi knows mom kicked me out…”
Tomo suppressed a deep sigh, but he figured it would be pointless to rant about it when he wanted to know more. “And after what you told me I have a really hard time believing Shin didn’t care. Even though I have no idea what happened, it sounds highly illogical that he didn’t care. You are worth so much more than be treated like that, you hear me?” he spoke out quietly, wondering if the younger even understood. “Have you talked to Shin about this? About anything since back then?”
“No.” and it hurt. It hurt so much and the truth hurt even more, he had split his heart open already so he didn’t even hesitate with words he wouldn’t be able to say in any other situation. A fact that he had suppressed and hid well even from himself. “I miss him… I miss him so much.”
Tomo closed his eyes in mute suffering. “Of course you do sweetheart. When you just terminate such a bond, and on top of it without talking about it, you create a deep wound that never stops to hurt, never stops to bleed, Rui.” his voice was still calm. “Time doesn’t heal all wounds. If you want to get rid of it you have to dig it up by the root, it’s the only way. Otherwise it will just come back again and again and-”
“Tomo.” he cut him off breathlessly and Tomo went quiet. “He kissed me, today when we met. He kissed me, and I-“ he gasped and really looked sickened with himself “I didn’t stop him.”
The blonde was quiet for maybe one and a half second, but that time seemed to be several hours in Rui’s head. To his surprise Tomo didn’t react at all like he thought he would. Instead of looking angry, furious, hurt or anything he looked… understanding?
“Sweetie, is that why you’re this upset?” he asked softly, feeling like the missing piece of the puzzle had been found. Rui looked taken aback by this reaction.
“I don’t deserve you. You- you do all you can for me and look what I do, what I am. I don’t deserve you. I knew I was going to ruin this, I knew-”
“Rui, get yourself together! I’m not letting you go.”
At that Rui met his eyes, his filled with confusion and some kind of drowsiness. He looked so helpless Tomo barely knew what he would do. Sure, he was pretty confused himself but he knew one thing for sure. “We’ll fix this. Trust me.”
“How can you say that? I don’t understand.”
“Rui, I’m not going to let you down or just give you up like the people around you apparently have done up till now.” he spoke in a clear, serious voice and it was hard for him to hide the anger that flared up inside him when he thought about it. He continued in a much softer voice. “I’m not letting anything take you away from me. I love you. I can’t even imagine life without you by my side. I won’t. I won’t let you go.”
Rui stared at him like he spoke a foreign language, but he knew somehow he got it. Still, with a light voice he asked a final question. “But why?”
“Because I love you more than anything.”
Rui shook his head and stared at him with big, emotion-filled eyes. At last a couple of droplets overflowed his eyes and silently rolled down his soft skin.
Tomo continued talking then, at the same time as he stroke away the tears. “You don’t know how to handle this because you have never dealt with it. You have to start letting yourself deal with these feelings instead of suppressing them.” he spoke with a gentle voice. “We’re going to work this out. Trust me.”
Rui calmed down gradually, snuggled up to Tomo’s steady heaving chest. “Feeling better?” he asked and leaned his forehead against the brown locks.
Rui nodded and sighed, the deep breath still a bit jumpy. This was very much to process to his slow working mind. The next few minutes were spent in calm silence and it wasn’t until now Tomo realized they were still in Kouki’s apartment. He curiously looked around and his eyes came to a halt at different objects in the room, until he suddenly felt Rui stir in his arms.
“I’m going back.” he said with a firm determination in his voice as he stood up and took the vocalist by surprise.
“Going back where?” Tomo asked and stood up with him, worriedly observing his pale face. “Rui, you should rest a bit first.”
“No, screw it. I’m going back.” he said firmly and started walking towards the door. At the same time soft knockings and then keys being inserted was heard through the apartment. Kouki barely had time to come inside before Rui stormed out of there.
“Rui!” Tomo called after him but it was useless, he didn’t stop.
Kouki looked back and forward between the leaving bassist to Tomo. “I’m sorry for bothering you like this.” Tomo said as he put his shoes back on.
“Yeah, you’re really troublesome.” he answered with a faint smile, then he looked at him with concern in his eyes. “Are you okay?”
He looked down the staircase where Rui had just disappeared, but he still heard his footsteps echoing. “I’ve had better days.” he said honestly and looked up at his dear friend with a sad smile. “I think it’s going to be okay though, somehow.”
“I have no doubt about it.” he said reassuringly. “Let me know if there’s anything I can do Tomo.” he said and touched his shoulder in a supporting gesture.
“Thank you.” the blonde said again, giving taller a quick smile before he said goodbye and followed the sound of the other’s rushing footsteps.
