I FOUND MY TABLET

Jan 13, 2012 00:43

I found my tablet while cleaning today. It was glorious.

I've had a love/hate relationship with the little guy ever since I got him. Tablets are great, and Wacom's pretty awesome about the plug 'n go versatility of it, but there's a learning curve, adjusting your hand/eye coordination to get it to be useful and not a hindrance.

I would try to draw with it, then an hour of frustration later, I would flip the proverbial table and say "FUCK IT!" and put it nicely away for a month or two, when I would rinse and repeat.

Gradually, I befriended it enough to work with it on a more regular basis, and got in a lot of practice for more tricky maneuvers by doing my photo retouching with Renoir.

(That's his name. I like Monet better, but he just looks more like a Renoir.)

Today, I rediscovered him, just after pulling out my sketchbook because I had a sketch idea. I found inspiration/motivation by googling Mucha, which is always helpful, and I said "What the hell?" and gave Renoir a chance to prove his stuff from scratch.

AND IT WORKED.

A few hours of on-and-off work, and I had my first digital-only drawing ever. It's not complicated, it's just a quickly-done sketch and slapdash at that, but it's something.

Ta-da.

It's a sketch for the Dragon Age 2 ongoing story I've been writing and releasing weekly. (ANOTHER THING I HAVE BEEN DOING DESPITE TABLE-FLIPPING) Hawke in all her Qunari warpaint glory.

So excited.

Anyway, I was so excited that I screencapped some parts of the process, for those who are interested.

Bare lines. Cleaned up and ridiculous colors for layer differentiation. xD I'm not going to post pictures of my sketch lines, because I'm too embarrassed. They're so messy and atrocious. Cleaning them up is my favorite part of the grueling lineart bit.

Color dump! Literally, just blocks of color.

Adding details, like the warpaint and hair highlights.

Cleaning up and setting a top layer of thicker outlines, mostly due to the Mucha on the brain.

SHADE LIKE CRAZY. TRY TO KEEP HUES EVEN HAHA RIGHT. WHERE ARE THE SHOULDERBLADES AGAIN? ON HER FACE? I will admit to googling back muscle anatomy at this point. xD

So now I'm going to attempt to write and pat myself on the back for overcoming a hurdle in my drawing block. Maybe I'll draw more.

When I'm not behind in writing. (Which might be never.)

writing, creativity, artsy, see these? they are my 'awesome' pants
