You two have another character to join in the "Most Bashed/Hated OUAT Characters". (Yes, again I'm covering the Once Upon A Time fandom because the levels of stupid has increased to over 9000.) Emma Swan, please take your place among your father and son (isn't it funny that three of the Charmings are being the new fandom chew toys. Gee, I wonder why...*glances at Rumpelstiltskin, Jefferson, and Regina fans) as being the third of the most bashed characters, thanks to the recent surge of bashing you're getting over on Tumblr.
For those not aware of what is currently going on Tumblr and various other places of congregation for OUAT fans, Emma has been getting torn a new one by many fans (of course, most of them belonging to Regina's fanbase.) ever since Fruit of the Poisonous Tree (1X11). However, when just the bashing over Emma's portrayal in that episode was beginning to cool, "Hat Trick" (1X17) airs and the OUAT fandom is introduced to mad yet tragic mad rogue known as Jefferson who immediately takes the place as the one of the fandom's darlings along with Regina and Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold who can never do any wrong. After that episode, Emma bashing has been slowly rising and then has reached an all-time high due to the most recent episode, "The Return" (1X19) and sneak peek promo. In "The Return" she not only confronted Regina and called her out on her indifference to Sidney taking the fall for her and her being behind the disappearance and kidnapping of Kathryn and framing Mary Margaret for murder and all the misery going on Storybrooke and threatened to take Henry away from her. As for the promo... [Read at your risk] In the promo, Regina is tied to a tree. Emma has her in a chokehold and says: "You took away our happy endings and now we're going to take yours." And with that, she takes a sword from David and swings and audience is supposed to assume that Emma has successfully severe Regina's head from her neck.
Of course, those scenes greatly frightened and saddened Regina's fandom (aka Evil Regals) and they do not appreciate Miss Swan's transgressions against their idol. And when an Evil Regal is upset and is in protective mode of Regina, prepare for an onslaught of ruthless and unforgiving bashing (funny how they preach forgiveness and redemption for Regina yet can't do the same other characters...) of the whoever character has dared to be less than civil to poor innocent Regina.
Anyway, long story short: here are the reasons Emma's getting bashed for:
Was a Emma's a total bitch to Jefferson! She didn't believe and she hit him! How dare she?! She should hook him with him, lol
Inspired by these two headdesk-worthy confessions: 1 and 2. Yeah, how dare Emma that horrible and stupid bitch! Hitting the man who kidnapped and drugged her and didn't believe his theory that the town is full of cursed inhabitants of fairy tales and folk tales. She should've just dropped her pants and have hot sex with that hot guy while screaming: "I believe you! I believe you! Oh, drug me some more, you hot stud!" (Please note I'm not criticizing anyone who likes or ships Mad Swan (Jefferson/Mad Hatter x Emma), I'm just pointing the ridiculousness of the rabid ones who are bashing Emma for not hooking up with their bishie).
It’s rather unprofessional not to know any laws whatsoever when you’re a bails bondsman. Also, why wouldn’t she look up the town charter or any of the laws at all?
The real problem isn’t Emma, but the writers. They keep writing nonsensical scenes that even we know can’t be real-world logical. Like, Emma letting Sidney take pictures of Kathryn’s abandoned car and calling David to the scene of the crime. Then you have the fact that Emma is the only person working for the sheriff’s department.
This were the words of this response for this confession. So wait? You admit the writers are making some mistakes toward the character, but you're going to hold it against her? Real reasonable and you're being more reasonable in that you're expecting real-world logic in a show about a fictional town being full of cursed inhabitants of a fairy tale world. And I guess you don't know how law enforcement in a small town works, do you? Some small towns only have a small number of officers, hell, even one officer. (Case in point: there's a thread board for law enforcement officers who belong to law enforcement offices in small towns that have five or less in a forum for law enforcement: Do your fucking research.) Hence why Emma had to get Sidney to take pictures of the scene: he's the only who has experience with law and photography. As for calling David to the scene of the crime, okay point there. Or Emma could have been trying to get an emotional reaction out of him to gauge if he was responsible or had involvement in Kathryn's disappearance. Still, minor things are good reasons to bash Emma relentlessly for and hold against her for a long while?
She's a dumbass! She called Regina's a sociopath!
That makes such sense. To bash Emma for using the wrong word. Oh, and newsflash: the average person who has no knowledge of diagnosing and classifying mental and behavioral illnesses wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a psychopath, sociopath or a crazy person. This is a case no different from Emma's. And finally, let's look at the classic signs of a sociopath and see which traits would fit Regina in Emma's point of view:
Glibness and Superficial Charm
Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."
Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.
Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.
Incapacity for Love
Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.
Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.
Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.
Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.
Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.
Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.
Other related qualities:
Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.
Contemptuous of those who seek to understand them
Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them
Authoritarian
Secretive
Paranoid
Only rarely in difficulty with the law, but seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned, or admired
Conventional appearance
Goal of enslavement of their victim(s)
Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim's life
Has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim's affirmation (respect, gratitude and love)
Ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim
Incapable of real human attachment to another
Unable to feel remorse or guilt
Extreme narcissism and grandiose
May state readily that their goal is to rule the world
Seems like a lot of bolded traits in the profile above fits Emma's view of Regina.
Emma said "I'm taking away something you love...I'm taking back my son!" That's proof she doesn't care about Henry and using him to control Regina!
Goddammit. Watch "The Return" and the prior episodes fucking again and take off your apologist goggles. Look at the circumstances that happened before that confrontation. Emma found out Regina was responsible for the framing of Mary Margaret. She knows Regina had a hand in the disappearance and kidnapping of Kathryn. She saw how Regina coldly and without remorse manipulated Sidney to take the fall for her crimes. Emma is realizing Henry's insistence that Regina is dangerous has validity. She sees that Regina is hurting and harming people who have been nothing but loyal and good to her and who she's close to, but discard them because they no longer had use for her. Emma is frightened and concerned Henry might be Regina's next victim. If she can surely hurt or intend to kill innocent people and/or people who care for her, who's to say, she won't do the same to Henry? That's why Emma said those to Regina. She's being proactive in the safety of her son. She's not trying to troll Regina.
[Don't read if you don't want to be spoiled] She's trying to kill Regina in the promo! Regina did nothing to her! She's horrible bitch, that Emma Swan! She' should forgive Regina or smex her and let Swan Queen come true! Lol!
Calm the fuck down, fanbrats. Regina's not going to die in the first season. Also, even if that sequence turns out to real and Emma does kill Regina...guess what? Emma would perfectly in the right to want to stab someone. Regina has done damage aplenty to Emma. She's the reason why she wasn't raised by her parents and had a horrible childhood living out of foster home to foster home, forming trust issues and not wanting to get close to anyone. Regina separated her parents from each other and attempted to sabotage their marriage and bond to each other. Regina has tried to kill her mother and has attempted to torment her in numerous ways to enact revenge upon her for something she did as a child. Last but not least, Regina has emotionally abused and neglected her son. Outside of personal motivations to kill Regina, Emma would probably take into consideration that Regina also imprisoned innocent citizens in a world they have no happy endings, they're stripped of their original personalities and the free will to act their true selves, they live in fear of her and in ignorance. You can believe Regina is justified in many things, but not in this. And as for bashing Emma for Swan Queen (Regina x Emma)...yeah, real sensible to bash her for not wanting to hop into bed with the woman who has made her life and others' lives miserable.
So there you have it folks: why Emma Swan is so detestable in the eyes of many in the OUAT fandom.
