About Hienkel and Yumiko! I've only read Volume 1 of the Hellsing manga (and thus only the first adventure of Hienkel and Yumiko at the end)... This is the English translation manga - I never did follow the Japanese manga (read about it before release and stuff). I'm just a causual Hellsing fan, really.
I would think they would be hated far and wide by many Christians - but... in my experience, most Christian anime and manga fans are NOT Hellsing fans. I must be one of the very, very few. Seriously, I think there are more Christians who can stomach NGE than Hellsing (NGE being possibly the most controversial series in existance, especially among Christian anime watchers). I was on a Christian anime fans message board. NGE eventually got banned from disscussion AT ALL because it caused so many fights on the board - Hellsing never got "topic banned" like that - but mostly because those few fans of it on the board were afraid to talk about it because of all the "It's so immoral!" people. Anyway... I'm getting off track...
Despite how bad they make my religion look, I liked Hienkel and Yumiko. I found them strangely hilarious. I think WHY they are not hated by Hellsing fans, but LOVED, is probably because of the very nature of Hellsing and its fans.
Hellsing itself is a VERY warped series. It's horror - with humor. I think all of its fans have a very warped sense of humor. You have to have a funny bone that's a little warped to enjoy it. It's the same way with Jhonen Vasquez fans, especially when you go beyond casual Invader Zim fandom and get into his comics. Very warped. Funny - but only to those who can stomach lot of blood and gross stuff happening - those who can find humor in fictional characters being killed left and right.
In life... I have a tremendous respect for life. In fiction, my favorite fictional character is Vash the Stampede (pacifist - with a gun!), but... I DO have a warped sense of humor - I can read or watch Hellsing and be all "The zombies' heads are exploding! Wahahhaha!"
So... I think that's why Heinkel and Yumiko/Yumie are not hated by the fandom - they're bloodthirsty, they're completely off their nut, they're WARPED, but that's what makes them so funny! They're just so completely PSYCHOTIC that it's funny - and those people with warped enough senses of humor to enjoy Hellsing in the first place find them funny.
Indeed, Yumi(ko) and Heinkel rock. Nor they make the Vatican look bad, there's actually still Inquisition in these days (it wasn't dissolve) however they keep their business in a low profile (guarding the Pope there's high trained assassins).
