Guide to SSHG Longfic (Post DH Year Two)
I searched through FanfictionNet, AdultFanfiction, The Archive at the End of the Universe, Skyehawke, Fiction Alley, Restricted Section, Granger Enchanted, WIKTT Archives, Ashwinder, The Petulant Poetess, OWL, Digital Quill and the sshg_exchange.
Below is listed every single completed SSHG story I could find of over 40,001 words posted between July 22, 2008 and July 21, 2009. The epics (over 100,000 words) are listed separately. I also listed in their own sections WIPs of this timeframe that have reached over 100,000 words (epic-sized), and those over 40,000 words but not over 100,000 words (novel-sized). I don’t mean to exclude any author or story, so if you know of a SSHG work of over 40,000 words that was posted during the second year of the post-DH era not listed here, let me know.
I put a star next to the completed stories I personally liked (I tried all below) and otherwise noted those recognized by awards and rec sites like fangirl_tour, Know It Alls (KIA) and crack_broom, as well as the sshg_awards to highlight those that you might find worthwhile checking out.

My favorites among the completed fic above are definitely somigliana's The Silvering Divide and silburygirl's The Proper Care and Feeding of Zombies--especially the first. A lot of what is special about The Silvering Divide, well, it would be a spoiler. Let's just say the take on Snape and how the author makes it fit with canon is unique and a treat. I can say though that one of the things that makes this story so appealing to me is that this isn't a Victorian Frock-coated Gramps Rickman Snape. He's a modern, young man (And yes, kiddies, in my book a 30-something is still young) born in the sixties, prone to wear t-shirts on informal occasions and with a description that more brings to mind Keanu Reeves rather than the current Rickman--and yet I feel is more in keeping with book canon than many a Snape inhabiting fanfic, and in that rare way that makes the ship fresh to me again. I loved Zombies for different reasons--the plotty mystery, the friendships in this ensemble piece, and for a secondary pairing, Ron/Pansy, that captured my imagination (Don't bash poor Ron! Give him a Slytherin of his own!) I also greatly enjoyed subvers's This Time, a true AU, unbashedly romantic, and wolf_moonshadow's Felis Familiaris, a charming third-year Gen fantasy story in the YA adventure novel mode very much in the Rowling spirit. And for those who like Lucius/Snape/Hermione, dickgloucester's A Taxing Affair is well worth the read.
Among the WIPs I'd continue to read future chapters of is milliejoan's Camerado, which weaves between the lines of HBP as well as the EWE (Epilogue, What Epilogue?) Becoming Silhouettes by rhiannon_lune, which is fresh and different. Though sadly abandoned, I think northangel27's Solace is well worth the read for the take on Lily (the author is a Snape/Lily shipper) So, any WIPs you're following during this period not on my list?
We haven't btw seen much drop off in number of fics posted in the ship except in one category--epics. My Post-DH Year One Guide included almost three dozen completed epics, while at this point there are nine--in a ship that has prided itself upon its epics. I find that rather worrisome. I feel that truly, the sshg_exchange has been our ship's saving grace--so many of the standout fics this year came from there--almost all of them, in fact, and the Exchange has promoted fic that is so often out of the box and free of ship cliches. But an Exchange with a limited time span for composing rarely produces epics.

My favorites among the completed fic above are definitely somigliana's The Silvering Divide and silburygirl's The Proper Care and Feeding of Zombies--especially the first. A lot of what is special about The Silvering Divide, well, it would be a spoiler. Let's just say the take on Snape and how the author makes it fit with canon is unique and a treat. I can say though that one of the things that makes this story so appealing to me is that this isn't a Victorian Frock-coated Gramps Rickman Snape. He's a modern, young man (And yes, kiddies, in my book a 30-something is still young) born in the sixties, prone to wear t-shirts on informal occasions and with a description that more brings to mind Keanu Reeves rather than the current Rickman--and yet I feel is more in keeping with book canon than many a Snape inhabiting fanfic, and in that rare way that makes the ship fresh to me again. I loved Zombies for different reasons--the plotty mystery, the friendships in this ensemble piece, and for a secondary pairing, Ron/Pansy, that captured my imagination (Don't bash poor Ron! Give him a Slytherin of his own!) I also greatly enjoyed subvers's This Time, a true AU, unbashedly romantic, and wolf_moonshadow's Felis Familiaris, a charming third-year Gen fantasy story in the YA adventure novel mode very much in the Rowling spirit. And for those who like Lucius/Snape/Hermione, dickgloucester's A Taxing Affair is well worth the read.
Among the WIPs I'd continue to read future chapters of is milliejoan's Camerado, which weaves between the lines of HBP as well as the EWE (Epilogue, What Epilogue?) Becoming Silhouettes by rhiannon_lune, which is fresh and different. Though sadly abandoned, I think northangel27's Solace is well worth the read for the take on Lily (the author is a Snape/Lily shipper) So, any WIPs you're following during this period not on my list?
We haven't btw seen much drop off in number of fics posted in the ship except in one category--epics. My Post-DH Year One Guide included almost three dozen completed epics, while at this point there are nine--in a ship that has prided itself upon its epics. I find that rather worrisome. I feel that truly, the sshg_exchange has been our ship's saving grace--so many of the standout fics this year came from there--almost all of them, in fact, and the Exchange has promoted fic that is so often out of the box and free of ship cliches. But an Exchange with a limited time span for composing rarely produces epics.
