His Dark Materials fan mix - Will/Lyra || "I Will Find You"
BACKGROUND: Simply put, this mix was inspired by a re-reading of the His Dark Materials trilogy and listening to "I Will Find You" by Clannad. Not at the same time, of course, but there you go. I heard the song and literally thought, "That is so Will speaking to Lyra!" And a fan mix was born.
I figure everyone's read the series, or at least knows about it to some degree, so a summary is probably unnecessary. I will say, though, that I think Philip Pullman's trilogy is one that, like the Chronicles of Narnnia, should be read at different stages of life. The first time I read the series was when I was 12, and I thought it was a good story but nothing more. I re-read it again a two or three years later and saw more to the story than what I had originally seen, but was still too young to really understand the whole thing. And then I starting reading it as a senior in high school, and WOW.
I was struck by so many things this third time around, particularly the relationship between the protagnists, Will and Lya. It's amazing to see how they both start out as complete opposites, and then, slowly but surely, begin to change into one another. Although Will and Lyra are only 12 years old, and perhaps a little too young to fall in love, Pullman portrays their feelings for one another so well that it is so incredibly touching and believable, and when they must return to their own worlds at the end of the series and part forever, you are so emotionally evolved that you just want to scream, "There must be another way!" But there isn't, and you feel the heartache as if you were Will or Lyra, and not just a bystander.
And those feelings are the basis of this mix. :) As far as the front and back covers go, the front is a scene from the London National Theatre's stage production of the trilogy (found at Bridge to the Stars); the back art is an unpubished John Howe drawing of Lyra and Will (found at his official site). I'm not so proud of the back cover, but whatever. ;__;
