random photodump of my trip to the island with a--- last weekend!
we met downtown after work and took the ferry over to nanaimo (the above photo was taken whilst waiting at the bus stop. the bus we took was packed with like-minded individuals). the fare had just increased in time for the long weekend so we were paying $5 extra per person (he paid for my fare which was a complete surprise and very sweet).
his parents picked us up from the ferry terminal (they greeted us both with hugs). and then i went to my sister's place to crash for the night.
the next morning, a--- picked me up and we did the following:
used bookshop browsing in downtown nanaimo...
and dark alley wandering
a picnic lunch at madrona point...
yeah, we're both really pale. (he's still slightly darker than me, but our hands are the same shade of pale which is pretty amazing)
tons 'o starfish! i have never seen so many. veritable clusters of 'em -- all purple and pink and orange...
one of the few pictures i took
trying to hide my camera and not fall over.
with a---'s parents (i got to teach them about conglomerate rock and limpets!)
that evening we played wii bowling and i managed to eke a winning both times.
afterwards, a--- and i returned to my sister's place where we proceeded to go for supper at the fox and hounds. sisterly approval gained!
pub grub! (i also saw my first bottle of absinthe behind the counter!)
the next day i went back over to a---'s parents' place and after brunch we played an intense game of monopoly. a--- trounced us.
looks like i'm praying for a quick and painless death...
i found my nook :)
afterwards, we walked around his parents' neighbourhood and then went out to costco (because that's what the cool kids do). and then as consolation, we got starbucks.
then we had a---'s mum's famous meatloaf (very tasty!) and went to catch a ferry.
we got to catch one of the new bigger, fancier ferries and got a couple seats to ourselves and spent some time sharing music. then we went out on the deck into the warm summer evening and watched the shore come nearer. the sunset was not particularly spectacular but the layer of greenish yellow smog hovering above the city was definitely... something.
all in all, a great trip and a wonderful way to spend the long weekend!
