Champ has had a swollen toe for a few weeks now, but it always comes and goes in cycles...it would swell up, get better, swell up, etc. It was weird. This weekend it was looking really gross, so I called the vet's office this morning and arranged for Champ to see Dr. Fiskett (a vet who specializes in exotics) at 2:00 this afternoon. I took him in, to find out that he had an abcess and needed surgery. So, they kept him, and I reluctantly came home without my little Champadoodle. I was worried that they'd have to keep him overnight because they close at 6:00 and I have a class then, so I wouldn't be able to pick him up. But Dr. Fiskett promised to do his surgery (which consisted of opening the abcess and cleaning it out) ASAP, and I got a call to pick him up at 4:30. He'll be on antibiotics for two weeks and pain medicine for a week. I prepared a small "recovery" cage for him, using the wire cage that Petit Four lived in for 3 months after we got her last spring. Dr. Fiskett wanted Champ to have a few days to run around in a small space on a soft surface until his toe wound closes up. So he's got a lining of paper towels, a shredded tissue bed, and his ball and wooden block, so he feels more at home. Of course, he's already been doing some "rehab," Champ-style, and climbing on the cage bars (and pushing his nose through them). I've been discouraging this behavior, but I'm about to leave for class so I can't sit here and watch him every minute.
