Struggles with the theater crowd

Jul 02, 2007 14:29

So I have just received e-mail from our director, who has criticised the Stage Manager (abbrev SM and it's more appropriate than you know if you have not done theater) for taking the cast to task for the following things:  not knowing our lines; showing up late to rehearsal; griping and complaining about things behind her back while not letting her ( Read more... )

The director is married to the artistic director and founder of the company, and is a revered and respected professor of drama at UCO in Edmond. He will be directing for OSP as long as he desires to do so. He is also, IMHO, a sweet, visionary, optimistic flake with lovely, pretentious sense of humor. You and I both know what kind of issues that personality type can get in to.

Thanks for pointing out the taoist nature of the advice; I had not yet made the connection. The giver of said advice is the best director I have ever worked for and I would work for him again anytime, anywhere, in anything. He is also a damn fine actor and his work--and that of a few other good folks in the show--will carry it. I am a minor luminary, but I do my part :-) !

Peaces,
H.

Oh, one of...those directors.

and I would speculate upon the initials of the actor in question, but that would be tacky.

there are no minor luminaries, only minor walls upon which they shine.

Why tacky? I'm curious as to what you are thinking; your thought process is not the usual predictable dreary sort of thing most people have...

aww, a compliment. Thank you.
I would guess that it was J. Shane Mc(somethingorother) whom I've worked with a number of times as an actor and witih him as director and...enjoyed and learned each time.
Now there's someone who should be teaching at UCO. And someone whom I can't imagine yelling about notes from a stage manager. Especially on email. (If I'm horribly wrong and it is J. Shane who has done the yelling, don't tell me...it would ruin my "hero" image of him)
And this really seems a minor thought to me. It's a bit like wanting to follow in Robin Williams' footsteps and then realizing that cocain isn't for you. It's something that comes naturally.

Sorry I took so long; been busy.
No, J. Shane McClure is not working this show; he's directing something in Guthrie. I have heard both good and bad about him, and I have seen him do good and bad work as an actor (his Prospero in January was awful...didn't know lines, slow, etc. We all have down times...). I haven't worked with Shane, but his mom and brother are members of the Lawton UU Church, so I know the family.

The actor I was speaking of is Hal Kohlman, who directed me in 2Gents and whose work as both actor and director I have seen from the audience as well as from backstage. He's professional all the way, and has a very sardonic sense of humor.

And of course your thought process is unique. Given the crap your brain has dealt with, how could it be otherwise. You're also smart, and the two in combination yield good stuff.

BTW, check out Despair.com if you don't already know it from Ralph. I'm pretty sure you'll appreciate their attitude.

Cyrano opened well, BTW, I'll post more on Monday.

peaces,
H.

thanks for despair
and thank you for the good thoughts.
I haven't worked with or around Hal I don't think. sorry for the confusion.

The times I've worked with J. Shane he has been, while not the greatest, at least consistantly good. but wow, that review didn't even sound he had been good. I am afraid that more and more of the people I've looked up to are falling due to age or oversized egos.
I hope for the best for you and yours.
