So I was reading The AV Club last night, scrolling through the tripe that is the comment board on some of their articles, when I saw the infamous Seven Words followed by "Just to inform you all that Carlin is dead." I honestly thought they were saying that his style of comedy was dead, that he'd been replaced by the high-octane run-around-and-scream-a-lot crap that Dane Cook does, which is something I'd normally disagree with vocally, but it was 2:30 in the morning, so I just decided to go to bed instead.
So I wake up and read his obituary.
I usually don't react too much when celebrities die. I honestly thought that Carlin would never die: he'd either be too pissed off to, or Death would want to keep him around for an update of the list of words, terms, and euphemisms that are not to be used in polite conversation. Of all the comedians out there, George is the one guy my family actually had a strong opinion about. My mom hated him (He's a dirty, dirty man!), my dad thought he was hysterical, my sister thought he was great (she was telling me bits and pieces of his routine when she was 11 and I was 9), and he's the only comic I ever bought an album for. Maybe some people will say he was our generation's Lenny Bruce, but I think he went further than Lenny. He explored almost every avenue of being a comic, without succumbing to the tried-and-true method of becoming a truly rich (read: sell-out) comic (groundbreaking stand-up to safe stand-up to comedy movies to romantic comedies to dramatic movies to serious dramatic movies to completely forgetting your stand-up roots, a la Tom Hanks and Robin Williams). Because of George, even though he didn't conceive them, he will be forever connected to those Seven Words, and I can think of no better way to say good-bye to my favorite comedian.

Shit. Piss. Fuck. Cunt. Cocksucker. Motherfucker. Tits.

RIP, George, and thank you.

Peace.
