So I saw Indy 4. And I liked it.
You heard me.
I fucking liked it. I had a great time. I left humming the theme. I was a little depressed that I couldn't go see it again later that day. The script that people are whining about? I think it was good that they tried something new. That ending? Yes, it did make sense. Why am I ranting about this? Syme.
Who's Syme? A guy from the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The one who keeps going on about how fantastic NewSpeak is. What does this have to do with anything? At one point, Winston mentions that eventually everyone will be taken away, even Syme, who does nothing but praise the system and the Party (and he eventually is). Why would Syme be taken away? Same reason that diehard fans of a franchise shouldn't be allowed to see any installments that are made at least ten years after the last installment. Syme wasn't praising the Party and NewSpeak altogether, he was praising it as it was right at that moment, that it was at its best, with nowhere to go but up if they stayed the course. If the Party made any changes to the system or to NewSpeak, Syme would have a problem with it, and probably make snide little comments that would get his ass picked up by the Thought Police and carried off to Room 101.
While I'm not saying this is going to happen to the fans (though there's a few I would love to see "vaporized"), it's kind of the same. These fans are fans of the series as it was when the last movie came out. And after 10 years, their minds have polished and re-polished those memories until every scene is genius, every line of dialogue is witty and smart, the script is lean, and the chemistry between the actors is completely believable. Any flaws can be blamed on the lack of technology or inexperience of the director at the time. So when a new installment comes out, any change to the formula seems like a betrayal to these people, and they won't even *try* to accept what's new.
I also hear that Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro might take a crack at original content based in the Middle Earth setting. I'd love to see what they could come up with. To the haters of this idea, I can say only this: For gods' sake, it's the director of the LotR trilogy and the director of Pan's Labyrinth, not Michael Bay and Uwe Boll.

No tip today, probably one in the next entry. Have to dogsit this weekend. Expect to see me panicked by the weekend, even if the dog doesn't freak me out at all.

Peace.
