* Today we got passport photos done, thanks to one of the people funding documents for trans folk, plus library and the like. I came home, sorted out things in the garden. The snow killed the tomatoes and more than half the lettuce. It was time to cut the lily stems and clear dead foliage. Some of the bulbs are well up and it was very much time to rotate. I have decided the sage is so happy and thriving on the high shelf, that I'm going to take it out of rotation and leave it there year round. The strawberries and carnations seem to me weathering and I've asparagus feathers spreading, so I've hopes of some next year. There is more tidying needing doing, but it was enough for one day, especially with light so short and the AS being assholish today. I started food and did dishes, at which point I was surprise offered a trip to see Rogue One, which I saw after dinner, lungs, and a tank cleaning. I was supposed to be doing paperwork, but one must gra chances like that when they come.

* Rogue One impressions, Contains spoilers

- First off, I was very impressed by how well they matched the look of the original New Hope, something Lucas didn't do while ruining his legacy, so props to everyone involved there. Seriously, it was aesthetically well designed, fitting beautifully with original designs, and incorporated new sets, characters, costumes etc. without that being jarring. It was something they absolutely had to get right if they wanted to make this lock like a puzzle piece with New Hope. It definitely does, even though no way could they have done the oirbital scenes with 70's tech.

- The sexy and brave anti-fascist Latino is one trope I can definitely get behind. Mr. Luna was a delight.

- The male diversity here was excellent for the most part, though I did notice how very few women were in it. Except for the protagonist, and the rebel commander, the fridged mom, and a couple small roles, there weren't many women. All the main characters but one? Men. Most of the alliance fighters and all the Imperials? Men. When they assembled the rag tag band of spies and saboteurs I kept thinking: where are the women spies and saboteurs? Some of the best spies and saboteurs have been women in RL. I noticed the lack of women in the message relay scene, in all sorts of places where there was no reason for the characters all to me male

- Even though the character was very dark grey, it was exciting to see someone with disabilities similar to mine fighting on the side of heroes instead of having all the disabled people being villains or victims. I literally can't think of anyone in another film with that set of physical issues actually being on the right side even though he did a terrible thing.

- I am going to need to do a lot of mulling about the willingness to show multiple grey rebels and imply all sorts of other pretty horrible things done for a good cause, but I'm not ready to word.

- I did love them costuming the motley band of spies and saboteurs in a way suggestive of WWII era parachutists and airmen, and the deliberate visual references to both Island hopping battles in the pacific and to the D-day beach landing in Normandy. The Empire always were deliberately coded as space NAZIs, and having the rebels coded as WWII allies was very right. That goes double with so many Republicans complaining that Rogue One depicting NAZIs as evil is a direct attack on them, which... yeah.

- It was fundamentally creepy watching my beloved Peter Cushing (he was my childhood iconic Van Helsing, okay?) acting again so long after his physical death. Science fiction writers have been writing of this sort of thing since before I was born, but I wasn't ready for it emotionally. I'm sure Mr. Cushing would have been cool with it, and it is good he continues to look after his family so long after he is gone, but it's still creepy, and while this was a pretty clearly ethical use, I have serious long term ethical concerns, particularly with things like commercials using dead actors this way, which has already started. Again, I'm not attacking the use here, it's more a long term concern.

- That cargo pilot broke my heart. They tortured him and very likely gave him brain damage and he still was incredibly brave on their behalf.

- That reprogrammed android made me think of a snarkier Douglas Adams's Marvin the whole damned time. I kept expecting him to say, "Brain the size of a planet and you ask me to open a door.

- I love that they did not do either of the two most obvious things at the end. I was dreading them, and this was so much better. Props to Disney for not Disnifying this at all. (That includes what I said above about doing bad things for a good cause). They could have so easily simplified the Rebels to be angels and added an incredibly cheesey and cliche romantic happy ending. They chose to talk about hard choices, ethical dilemmas, and sacrifice instead. I am really impressed.
