* 71 Syrian refugees including children were found suffocated in the back of a refrigerator truck in Austria. Meanwhile, hundreds more north African refugees are missing and presumed drowned off the coast of Libya. European leaders mouth platitudes, but they are treating these war refugees like criminals and invaders and not people trying to flee horrific situations in hope of safety for their children.

1. This is a lot of why I love both Eleanor and Charles as characters: He loves her strength. She refuses to let anyone stop her and mows over anyone in the way between her and her goal. I love them individually, and I love their messy, messy dynamic. Love can never be easy for them because they are both so strong and stubborn. Theirs is a love between too Powers with agendas in conflict, and yet it is so strong they can not manage to leave each other alone for all the pain that causes them. I think part of why they are both attractive to each other and endlessly in conflict is because they are so fundamentally alike, stubborn and utterly ruthless in pursuit of their goals. The difference is actually, that she will sacrifice anyone: Max, Hornegold, Charles, and Charles up until now can never quite bring himself to sacrifice her. I suspect that is about to change in season 3, but we will see.
This is a relationship I can understand and identify with. This is a relationship so achingly rare in media that I can’t leave it alone either.
2. I keep thinking about Eleanor's pride and how she has eight men killed because she was forced to back down, using Anne's request as an excuse. I keep thinking about Anne telling Max, "I didn't do it for you." Anne's reasons stay occluded until we get her backstory. Eleanor didn't do it for Max either, though I suspect she did want Max freed, just as Anne wanted Max freed. It's just for both of them the strongest motive is elsewhere. Anne is saving herself. Eleanor is saving her pride.
3. I also keep thinking about Mr. Scott in the slaver hold, that moment when the woman makes him see that for all his love for Eleanor, all he will ever be is a possession. No amount of hard work or love or loyalty will ever make him anything but a possession to white people, even one who pretends to respect him and treats him comparatively well. I say pretends, because she never once thought to free him, despite having all the power she needed to do it for years. Respectability politics changes nothing about his situation. Richard Gutherie put him in that slave hold without a qualm. I keep thinking about Mr. Scott's absolutely justified anger. And yes, she works out a way to free the slaves for him, but she also is furious at his display of agency in leaving her for Hornigold. She may like and trust him, but she fails to see him as a full human being with his own motives and goals.
4. Not long after the scene where Mr. Scott asks for his favour from Eleanor (Charles negotiation with his personal demon intervening), we get Mr. Gates starting his break up with Flint. We get the moment where Mr. Gate realizes that Billy, and thus he is expendable in Captain Flint's pursuit of his goals, that no love or loyalty makes him worth saving in Flint's eyes. That does not look like an accident to me. These three scenes together: Slave to Mistress, Ex-Slave to former master, Quartermaster to Captain: all about favours and the subtext about freedom and expendability and bondage.
5. I love Randall. People underestimate him because of his head injury, but he pays attention and he stands up for himself and what he wants, over and over. I love that he is still fundamentally a pirate. He is not sanitized saint, but a full person with a care to his own self interest.
6. I have written before extensively about Flint and Miranda's pride and how that relates to their goals, so I'm not going to recap that here.
7. I think the theme this episode is father figures and paternalism. It's threaded through everything. There are a lot of people making bad decisions for other people because they are sure they know better than that person themselves. There is Miranda turning the Father (the Priest)'s paternalism back on him. There's also the Gates/Bones Father/Son thing and Vane the ex child slave returned to confront and battle the man that took him. There is the struggle between Richard and Eleanor Guthrie's plans. Even absent, he is very, very present.
8. Fundamentally, Anne and Vane are symbolically freeing themselves.
