Father and Son talks

Jul 19, 2009 19:27

The fight had happened four days ago now, and it was Monday. Ben was due to be at work, but the last place he wanted to be was with his father. He figured that his leaving home was in effect his big I quit anyway. Sarah, however, had to go off with the girls shopping at the mall for clothes for school. She dragged Ben along, but once the girls ( Read more... )

Ben had gone and found Sarah, giving her the bags she had been collecting and telling her that he needed to go clear his head. He didn't promise to find her later, or if he was even going back to her place that night ( ... )

Sammy was sitting at the coffee table in the living room, continuing to work her way through that coloring book she's been getting through all week. She wasn't oblivious to the Ben shaped hole that'd been left after the latest Winchester blow-out. She didn't know how, or why, but she knew that her big brother hadn't been home in a long time and she missed him. A lot. It made her parents sad, and now Alec had disappeared with him, and Sammy was suddenly feeling very lonely in this great big house.

Her head picked up when she heard the door open, and she did a double take when she saw who it was. She had been starting to think that he was never coming home, and when she spotted him, she was on her feet and charging towards him, throwing her arms around his waist and burying her face in his stomach.

"Don't leave again."

Ben was tackled before he was able to even get out of the front hall. His arms were in the air, and after a moment he lowered them to her shoulders.

"Sorry, kid. I'm just here to get my stuff and go." He wasn't going to lie to her.

And with that, he was hit with the wide teary eyes of a seven year-old who didn't understand why her big brother was leaving her. "You can't! Everybody's sad when you're not here, and Alec's gone and Mom's cleaning all the time, and Dad doesn't talk to anybody and when he came home before he was really really sad. He's sorry, Ben, he is, just stay."

Good job, Ben. You've made your sister cry.

Yeah, just add it to the list the Winchesters had on how much he sucked.

"Yeah, well maybe if I'm gone, you won't be sad anymore since I make every sad." He tried to wrench himself free from her.

"That's not how it works!" she said with a growl before slamming her fist against his stomach. She didn't have a lot of power behind it, but she intended it to hurt. Then she let him go, her head hanging down and hands coming up to swipe at the tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Why don't you like us anymore?" she asked quietly, her shoulders curling up on themselves.

"Hey." Ben knelt down in front of his sister and looked her in the eye. "I'm always gonna love you, Sammy. You're my baby sister. Don't ever forget that. But sometimes people just can't always be together. It doesn't mean that you don't like them."

He was trying not to let himself get upset in front of his sister. "I'll see you again. Just not for awhile, ok?"

Sammy paused for a minute, moving forward and resting her head against his shoulder. "Dad didn't mean it. Whatever he said, he didn't mean it. He and Mom had a big fight -- they don't want you to go. They just get worried about you. They get angry cuz they're scared."

Ben picked Sammy up since it was going to just be easier to carry her upstairs. "I know, Sammy. But they got to tell me that and not yell at me. Otherwise I don't believe them."

Her arms slid around his neck and she let him pick her up, just staying close while he was here. "I missed you. So did Alec."

"I missed you too." Alec he knew, but there was still a bit of residual anger at his brother from their argument at the Sarah's that came back.

They got to his room and he put her down on his bed, then went to go find a duffel bag and his backpack.

She sat there, kicking her legs slightly for a moment and watching him as he went. "Where you gonna go?"

"I don't know. I could see if Uncle Sam will let me crash on his couch for awhile. I think I remember where he's living. I'll be fine though."

Because really, Ben didn't have a plan at all. He was just hoping that his uncle could take him in, or else just find friends who will let him crash until he got a job and turned 18 so he could get a place of his own. It was only a few months.

She squirmed slightly in her seat, looking at her hands in her lap. She was quiet, before pushing herself off the edge of the bed and running out of the room. "I'll be right back."

And with that, she was taking off down the stairs towards the kitchen, looking for wherever her mother happened to be hiding. Because right then? She knew that Lisa was the only one who could stop him.

"Mommy!" She whispered, grabbing hold of her mother's hand. "Ben's in his room. You can't let him leave!"

Ben wasn't stupid and knew exactly where Sammy was going. He just sped up his packing, not wanting to get into another argument today.

"Yeah, hurry home," Lisa said softly, hanging up the phone with Dean and then kneeling down to look Sammy in the eye.

"I know sweety. I saw him carry you upstairs and I just called Daddy. I need you to wait at the door and let him in, ok? I'm going to go upstairs and talk to him. Can you do that?"

Sammy nodded before dashing off to the window to wait for her father, pushing herself up on the window seat.
