The fight had happened four days ago now, and it was Monday. Ben was due to be at work, but the last place he wanted to be was with his father. He figured that his leaving home was in effect his big I quit anyway. Sarah, however, had to go off with the girls shopping at the mall for clothes for school. She dragged Ben along, but once the girls

Instead he took a long walk, hands shoved in his pockets as he thought over it all. He knew he was being stupid and should just go home, but he was too proud to admit it. It still hurt him that Dean couldn't admit at all that he had made mistakes too. Ben knew what he had done was stupid, but he also was careful. He knew he was safe. They had just jumped all over him like they always do.
He was tired of being the example. Tired of Alec and Sammy always getting away with things, and he got in trouble. Alec was the genius and adopted kid. Sammy was the girl and the baby. And Ben was just Ben, and he felt more and more that he just couldn't make either of them happy.
Maybe it would be better for him to just go. He was turning 18 in October. He'd been working at the garage since he was 15 and could get a job easily at any garage he wanted to.
But he just wanted to go home. He wanted his mother to say she was sorry that she didn't let him explain, or trust that he had known what he was doing - even if it was stupid to them. He wanted Dean to just... to show he cared again. Like when he had been little. Now everything was Sammy this and Sammy that. He and Alec had long intellectual conversations that Ben couldn't even begin to fathom.
All Ben knew was baseball stats and cars, and that really didn't go far anymore. He just felt... like he wasn't needed anymore anyway. So why did they even care?
It was almost dinner time when he got back to Sarah's, and he leaned against the fence and stared at his house for a moment.
If Dean wants me gone, then fine. I'll just go get my stuff and go. Maybe I'll stay with Uncle Sam for awhile until I can get my own place.
Making up his mind, he walked across the street and pulled out his keys, opening the door and intending just to go to his room and get his stuff and avoid everyone else.

Her head picked up when she heard the door open, and she did a double take when she saw who it was. She had been starting to think that he was never coming home, and when she spotted him, she was on her feet and charging towards him, throwing her arms around his waist and burying her face in his stomach.
"Don't leave again."

"Sorry, kid. I'm just here to get my stuff and go." He wasn't going to lie to her.

Good job, Ben. You've made your sister cry.

"Yeah, well maybe if I'm gone, you won't be sad anymore since I make every sad." He tried to wrench himself free from her.

"Why don't you like us anymore?" she asked quietly, her shoulders curling up on themselves.

He was trying not to let himself get upset in front of his sister. "I'll see you again. Just not for awhile, ok?"

They got to his room and he put her down on his bed, then went to go find a duffel bag and his backpack.

Because really, Ben didn't have a plan at all. He was just hoping that his uncle could take him in, or else just find friends who will let him crash until he got a job and turned 18 so he could get a place of his own. It was only a few months.

And with that, she was taking off down the stairs towards the kitchen, looking for wherever her mother happened to be hiding. Because right then? She knew that Lisa was the only one who could stop him.
"Mommy!" She whispered, grabbing hold of her mother's hand. "Ben's in his room. You can't let him leave!"

"Yeah, hurry home," Lisa said softly, hanging up the phone with Dean and then kneeling down to look Sammy in the eye.
"I know sweety. I saw him carry you upstairs and I just called Daddy. I need you to wait at the door and let him in, ok? I'm going to go upstairs and talk to him. Can you do that?"
