Massimo Vignelli has published The Vignelli Canon, a 96 page book on the intangible and tangible issues that govern his work. It's free and it's pdf.
A great piece of writing (and visual stuff) from a great designer.

i'm trying to find this book. it has a rundown of every type/niche of graphic design, portfolio ideas for each, etc. i can't remember the title or author, just that a lot of the pages have a seafoam green colour to them. the pages giving portfolio ideas are white on black.
