So my first week of Philmont has come to an end and it has been the longest week in the history of Bekah. My first couple of days were really lonely, and I was worried that perhaps I wouldn't find my niche. Well, I guess I still really haven't, but it's definitely getting better. Our first week was training, which was mostly tedious, except when we got to go out into the backcountry and hike, and then it rocked my socks off. If I get one thing out of this experience ( and I imagine I will definitely get more than one) it'll be how much I absolutely love the outdoors. Being in V-town doesn't give me much of a chance to get out and stretch my hiking legs, but here the opportunity practically smacks you in the face everyday. Just today we tackled a 9,000 ft peak, the "Tooth of Time." For all you Rapid Citians, this hike was like Little Devil's Tower times three. Steep as shit that doesn't stop, and then bouldering at the top. But so worth it...oh yes, so worth it.
Already I've been out and about enough to get a serious tan, unfortunately a farmer's tan, but a kick-ass tan nonethless; so by the end of the summer I'll have the most rockin' shirt, socks, and shorts tan you've ever seen along with "don't make me kick you in the face" calf muscles....oh yeah.
So while the first week was mildly tedious and I was lonesome and homesick, I'm really looking forward to next week when I actually get to start working with the kids. Enough of this sitting around talking about it shit, just let me do it!
So I'm gearing up to have the time of my life out here in the great bear-packed outdoors.
This was definitely the right, and awesome decision to come here. Now if only I got cell service so I could still be in regular contact with the fam and friends.
Oh, and Scott needs to get his sweet-ass back from the backcountry. Not only do I miss him bunches, but I'm extraordinarily jealous of all the backcountry hiking he gets to do.
Hope everyone else's summers are going swimmingly.
