At long last Margot falls asleep and her father lays her cautiously in the little bed.
When he turns to Hermione, she hasn’t moved, but her eyes glitter.
In two strides, Severus takes her in his arms, and she buries her face into his white shirt.
Her head feels very light. An indefinable pressure swells in her chest, bubbles of aching happiness. “Like a bottle of Champagne,” she thinks, and she has barely the time to laugh before she overflows.
“Now, now,” he says, smoothing the unruly hair. “Or do you need lullabies too?”
“Lullabubbles,” she smiles through her tears.
