The bed was alone on the farthest end of the Hospital Wing; curtains drawn all the way around save for where she had slipped through in the middle of the night. The pale moonlight peeked through the gap and lay across the patient’s chest in a diagonal streak, the steady rise and fall of his chest the only indicator that he was still alive.
She knew it would be easy for him to let go, to choose the undiscovered country and leave the pain of this world behind.
“Please…” she finally whispered, bringing his hand to her lips. “…pick me.”
