Going through and adding old theories to this already thick collection of my theories. This is an old one from ARF the HBP thread. I have more that adds a twist to these thoughts. I will add in another post.

(Ok I'm writing this on a whim and I'm going on memory and have not looked up in the books direct quotes.)
This is a short essay , that I have sent my son, to be published in the next Quibbler.
The Psychology of Draco Malfoy.

I had once posted somewhere earlier, back on the HBP thread, about my ideas of Draco. A chapter someone said is going to be in the HBP, it's called "Draco's Detour." If I remember correctly, I said that it might mean that Draco might be afraid of becomming a DE and following Voldemort. Then (with a stretch) He would join Harry's side. I mentioned something like the reference to Draco running and screaming when he ran into Voldemort in the forest in the first book. It's obvious that he does not have his father's strength but at the same time loves his father very much.
First thing we notice, Harry meets Draco in the dress shop (Diagon Alley). Draco's is a bit snooty, he loves Quidditch and he is predjudiced against muggles. He also, greatly admires his father, he comes from money, and is also pureblood. He talks friendly like to Harry. This being the first wizard child that has ever talked to Harry.
Later, at the school, he introduces himself to Harry. He holds out his hand to him in friendship. He messes things up for what I believe was a truely sincere offer of friendship, by insulting the choice of people Harry had just made friends with, the Weasley's. So, when Harry turns him down on his offer. At the time I thought Draco was just angry. (But, maybe it was something more.)
My main question is...
~ Why did Draco try to make freinds with the one who is most famous for bringing down Voldemort?
I'm sure Draco knew that his father was very upset with having lost Voldemort. Draco seems to quote his father often and knows a lot of things that is going on. (maybe he eaves drops or Lucius thinks its safe to speak openly at home in front of his son.) In which case, we are led to believe, Draco must know (or at least suspect) that his father is a Death Eater. Draco is by no way dumb. (I can't remember where it was written, but Lucius was upset that his son was second (in grades) in their year, behind a mudblood. My question here is, Why would he want to make friends with Harry particularly?
(An admission, I saw the first movie first and was inspired to read the books after that.) So, when I finshed watching the movie, (and read the first two books) I reflected on how Draco became Harry's enemy. It seemed obvious that Draco might have just wanted to get close to him so that he could hand over Harry to his dad. (trying to satisfy his father and make him proud, or maybe even try to get his father's attention.) I'm beginning to think otherwise. Maybe Draco's pride was just hurt (that Harry chose Ron) and he's retalliating agianst Harry. I seem to recall the way that he talks about Harry when Harry is not around. It's not quite as insulting as when Harry is present. It always seems to be in the reference to the fact that Harry chooses to be friends with the Weasley's (and a mudblood) and not him. He just can't seem to understand why Harry would do this. It always seems to come back to that choice. If he really hated Harry that much, he would not care as to whom Harry hangs out with. My point being, HE DOES CARE.
I was just reading in the fifth book where the quidditch game took place. "Weasley is our King!" All Draco's effort was towards putting down Ron's family. Even after Harry got the snitch, instead of throwing insults to Harry about Harry, he threw insults of the Weasley's at Harry. He's insulting Harry's choice of friends again. Well, he did manage to get in one or two at the end about Harry's mother, but only because Harry didn't rise with his previous Weasley insults. Draco's main theme is always to insult the Weasley's and open up Harry's eyes to what he feels a friend should be- him. He's mentioned several times that Harry made the wrong choice in friends.
Another note, Crabbe and Goyle. With friends like that, I would get jealous of Harry's friends too. He sees Harry being able to have a set of friends that understands what he talks about. Crabbe and Goyle are too much of a suckup to be able to give Draco a proper friendship. Crabbe and Goyle are so much beneath Draco, How can he stand being around them (other than for protection.)? A mind boggling relationship if I do say so myself. I still think Draco sees Harry more as an equal and is still trying to get back at Harry for not wanting to be his friend. All the times he tries to get Harry into trouble, he has just been trying to cause a hurt for a hurt.
Now with all of this said, here's my theory.
Back to the topic of Draco and how he might really feel about Voldemort. Also, think about the Sorting Hat's song in the fifth book. All of the school will need to come together in order to be strong. Divided the school will fall. It's my belief, that somehow, Harry will do something that will be great towards Draco. Draco will either be humbled or just decide that he wants to turn sides and join Dumbledore. Despite all the hero-worship he has for Lucius. Maybe Lucius will show that he feels being a Death Eater is more important than Draco's life. (I honestly believe this to be true.) Could Harry somehow step in to save Draco's life and show that he values life despite the fact that Draco has been so awful to him? Could Harry do this as possibly Lucius had the choice to and chose Voldemort instead of Draco? A real eye opener for Draco to really see his father's true green color.

Yes. I have also wondered about Narcissa, particularly her relationship in her family (her, Lucius and Draco.) I have seen different versions of her protrayed in rp's and I really don't see her as anything like those. I believe that Rowling has saved Narcissa's real, in depth, introduction for these last two books. We will probably get to know her much better soon. I believe her to be closer to Lucius' equal, if not I feel she may be a bit more dominant. Two reasons for this theory. One is when Draco mentions that his dad wanted to send him to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts. Lucius had to give in to his wife. (She wanted Draco closer to home.) Secondly, something to think about, we all know how strongly Lucius hates Dumbledore. I really think he and Narcissa would have had to have a row about this being where Draco's education would be held. She won out on this issue. Is she the stronger one in the family? Then look at her closer family ties, meaning Bella her sister. Wow! Now that is one strong dominant lady. I'd hate to see who's brave enough to go up against her wishes in the family. What if she and Narcissa are a lot alike in temperment? It's rumor that Bella probably stayed with Narcissa after her escape from Azkaban, isn't it?:headscratch: I can't remember if it was actually said in the book. But if so, then they get along quite nicely and are not bickering siblings then.
As for Narcissa's relationship with Draco, I feel that she would protect him if she has the knowledge that he may be in danger. I feel that her chosing Hogwarts to keep him closer, means that she values what happens to him. Maybe she also notices that Draco does not have his fathers strength and is a mother enough to notice this about him. This could be the reason she wants him closer to home. She has to know what all her husband is up to, uh... his ambitions about following Voldemort. More reason to keep him close, I think? I see Lucius dropping Draco in a minute if Voldemort asked.
