I'm a first-year PhD student in neuroscience. At my program, students come in without a mentor and do three lab rotations before choosing a "home" for their dissertation research. I am in the very fortunate position of having been accepted to several great PhD programs in developmental psychology. I have narrowed down my choices to 2 schools.
