July Multi-Fandom Fic Recs
I feel like I didn't read much fanfic this past month, but I think that's partly because I read one GIGANTIC fanfic and then had a bit of a fanfic hangover, LOL. Still mostly reading SPN fic, but some Hobbit stuff snuck in since one of my all-time favorite fics finished posting and, of course, I had to binge re-read the whole thing to celebrate.

He at first chalks it up to having been empty: to a year of disuse, to odd scents filtering their way in and settling like cobwebs in the absence of his usual routine, tea and baking and the drying of herbs. Perhaps, once he begins these things again, it will not feel so cavernous, so lonely, so strangely and painfully bare, like a tree stripped of its leaves come winter.
But weeks pass, and nothing changes. So maybe it’s not the emptiness, but the fact (which he is trying his very hardest to dutifully ignore) that he left his heart behind to crystalize in the caverns of the Lonely Mountain.
Really lovely ~everybody lives~ fic with Bilbo going back to the Shire and Thorin eventually following him. I really enjoyed their characterization and relationship here.

(Bagginshield, Gimli/Legolas) In which recovery takes time, the dead members of the Company take to watching Gimli as though he’s a soap opera, the living struggle with being left behind, Legolas is confused, Khuzdul is abused, and Thorin is four feet and ten inches of guilt and anger.
I have been reading this fic for over seven years, which is VERY unusual for me as I basically never read WIPs, but it is one of the most beautifully written things I’ve ever read, and I'm both thrilled and a bit sad that the fic is finally complete! It essentially starts with Thorin's canonical death at the end of the Hobbit and continues on through the end of the the events in the Lord of the Rings. The fic does a truly astounding job of blending all of the Tolkien works/appendices with the movie canon to create an utterly compelling retelling. The main fic itself is Teen-rated, with Bilbo/Thorin and Gimli/Legolas as the primary pairings, though there is another 90k worth of codas/outakes in the Sansûkh: The Appendices series, including the Explicit Thilbo fic I linked above! The characterizations are fucking fantastic and the dwarves are especially wonderful. I honestly cannot do this fic justice trying to explain how much I adore it. We get to see both the quest/fellowship of the ring and what was happening in Erebor during LoTR, we get to meet so many dwarves (I’m especially happy about all the kick-ass female dwarves!), we get to see Legolas and Gimli and their antagonism and how it evolves into friendship and then more and it’s so achingly beautiful and believable. We see Thorin struggling with his guilt over the gold-sickness, his heart-ache at realizing Bilbo was his One far too late, his resolve to protect Gimli and Frodo at all costs. There is a large cast here and every single man, dwarf, hobbit, and elf jumps right off the screen. The research that went into this is just staggering. It’s honest to god perfection. One of, if not the best fanfics I've ever read.

Really fun AU with Jared and Jensen as FBI partners who, of course, have ~feelings~ for one another! I really enjoyed their relationship here and it was lovely watching things slowly develop between them as they worked their various cases!
