Wait, there is too much...let me sum up...

So, it's been awhile, and I've been buried. Let's start with GenCon. It was a blast! Blake and checkybart made very good traveling companions, even though I was a little worried about getting checkybart on the plane. He did very well-we all did when Frontier airlines taxed our patience to the limit by causing us to spend our entire first day of the convention in the Denver airport. Let us just say that I will never be flying Frontier again, especially after they stranded everyone on the way back as well. It's not so much the stranding, as I understand that happens, it's the extremely rude and callous way they treated us. At any rate, lesson learned. Once we got there it was awesome, and to confirm our massive geek status, we made the finals in a D&D tournament. Like any of us needed confirmation. Here's a picture that sums it all up:

It's been a long time since I functioned an entire weekend with that little sleep.

I had to bust my ass to get back to CA for a class I had registered for months ago that came with a stipend (which I spent most of on the plane ticket trying to get to it), only to find that they were going to cancel the class because 2/3 of the people who had registered for it didn't show up. Instead, they gave us the option to drive to San Gabriel the rest of the week. It was a long trip, but by god I was going to the class (which was on integrating technology into your classroom and was excellent). The good news? A guy I know through a mutual friend offered to drive all week. The bad news? I have officially had enough of that guy now. He's a lot to take every day all day for a week.

The class was great, and incredibly dense with information. I came home each day absolutely exhausted, which wasn't a stretch since I started out jet-lagged to begin with. I'm a little skeptical of how much of it I can use given the luddite-style school district I work for. We shall see. Speaking of the which, the beginning of the school year is approaching like an oncoming train. So I may as well post the last few books I got through this summer:

#21 Soon I will Be Invincible-by Austin Grossman. A very entertaining book about superheroes written from the POV of a supervillian.

#22-#24 The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. Might as well get it in before the movies come out.

#25 The Left Hand of Darkness by Parker DeWolffe. Another Eberron novel with possibly the least sympathetic protagonist ever. I don't plan on reading the rest of the series.

Wow, how depressing. Summer is nearly over and I'm only halfway through my goal of 50. It's unlikely I'll make it since school is starting and I'm doing math journals this year. On the other hand I learned to knit this summer and I'm halfway done with a pair of socks. And I made a webpage for my classroom. And my first podcast.

Feeling a little better now. Still more to tell, but this is long already. More another time.

books, school
