1. In high school I got a summer scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. I did not go.
2. I was in a steel drum band for 7 years. For those of you who know music, we once made a 12 measure song last 45 minutes at the World Music Festival at CalArts. I guess we were like the Grateful Dead of Steel Drum Bands.
3. I have a BA in musicology. For my senior project I decided to write my paper on the development of valves in the french horn (Oh yeah, I used to play the french horn FYI), then I learned to play the valveless horn from the 18th century that used handstopping to perform one of the pieces at the recital I decided to do that also traced the development of the french horn. Wow, I'm a huge geek.
4. I have climbed both the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon (what the heck, they're practically next to each other).
5. My first teaching job was teaching music at a Catholic School in Wasco, CA. It was there I decided that I could never be a music teacher.
6. My first credentialed teaching job was teaching 1st grade. In Spanish. I used to be a lot more fluent in Spanish than I am now (and I used to come home barely able to speak in any language that first year).
7. I helped support myself in college by being a shift manager at a Jack in the Box (I also worked there in high school). To this day I still can't really eat french fries, and I almost never eat at Jack in the Box.
