Prompt: 15. Halo Effect
Word Count: 399

Disclaimer: If I’d own lost, I’d be playing with Sawyer right now. Written for fun, I borrow.
A/N: English is not my first language. I suck with titles, sorry. My first “real” Lost fic (because I did play a bit with Saywer in a pre-island AU crossover with Sean Bean before… *wink*). I would LOVE constructive criticism.

Hard to shake

The banana is a bit green, but it will calm down her hunger for a while. Sighing, Libby starts peeling it, resigned. It’s not like she has any other choice, and it is food after all. She vows to avoid fruits for at least 2 months if they ever get rescued. If being the key word here.

She hears the footsteps at the last second, just as a shadow falls on her. Both tell her it is not her usual visitor, but she is surprised when Ana Lucia stops and stands beside her, unsure of herself, clearly wanting to talk to her, if not searching her company. Since they merged with the survivors of the fuselage, Ana Lucia has avoided everyone’s contact but Jack’s.

Putting her hand on her forehead to avoid direct sunshine in her eyes, Libby smiles, welcoming the short brunette

“Hi Ana! Want to sit down a bit?”

She stands there for a moment, balancing on the balls of her feet, before slumping at her side.

“Hey.”  She stares at the jungle’s tree line, playing in the sand with her stick, always tense, always guarded.

“Want a banana?”

Ana lets one of her rare smiles slip.

“Yeah, thanks.”

Asking Ana questions is not the way to get her to talk, she learned that quite from the start. But a habit is hard to break, and with genuine concern Libby inquires

“How are you doing?”

Ana has a short bitter laugh

“Everyone hates me, but apart from that… I guess it’s ok.”

“Ana…”

“They do.” there is resignation in her statement.

“Give them time Ana, it was a shock…”

Ana quickly gets up, mumbling an excuse and a goodbye, getting her defenses high up behind a cold front once more. Libby looks at her go back where she came from, once more against the light.

Biting in her banana, Libby thinks life is ironic. On the other side of the island, a few minutes after the crash, Ana Lucia had saved a blond girl. Therefore, everyone trusted and relied on her strength to survive without question, even when she made dubious decisions like throwing Nathan in the pit. Over here, she had started her journey by accidentally killing a blond girl. Therefore, whatever she said and her every action would be judged with scepticism and defiance.

A black halo, even walking towards the sun.
