“We’re sorry, but the pediatric ward is full, so you’ll be staying in the normal unisex ward. Is that alright?”

Marni nodded. She wasn’t too fond of the idea, but she knew she couldn’t object. She tried to smile, but as always, her nerves failed her and her face remained calmly blank.

She was led down a hallway that was surprisingly empty. The nurse explained that usually there were a lot of people wandering the hallways at this time, which was craft time. Marni nodded again. One of the perks to being Non-verbal was that no one really expected much. Marni appreciated that, it usually kept people from bothering her. She bit her hand a bit as the nurse kept talking. She was saying something about room 300.

They stopped at a small room with one bunk and a small day bed. She looked around, and seeing two small men in the room, she waved her hand. It flopped at her side limply. She hated when that happened.

“It seems you'll have some roommates,” the nurse said. She checked the clipboard tucked under her right arm. “A Mr. George Noyce and a Mr. Walter Kovacs.”

She turned to the two men, who both looked like they'd been drugged. “Walter, George, this is your new roommate, Marni Retinski, she’s a non verbal Autistic.” The nurse spoke as if she were talking to a small child. That’s pretty much how all the people act around here, like they were taking care of a bunch of idiots. These people are nothing but bullshitters. Her 14 year old mind felt a flash of guilt at using such language, but she quickly shrugged it off. It’s not like anyone could read my mind or anything. Fuck them.

Marni scribbled on her note pad. Her handwriting wasn’t the best, but if she wrote big enough, most people could read it.

"I can speak for myself. I’m not retarded," she wrote. Then, "It’s nice to meet you both."

George stared at the note. He looked as if he was thinking really hard. At least, Marni hoped that was what he was doing. He could just be shitting his pants.

A small sad smile formed on his lips, “Nice to meet you, Ms. Retinski. Where did you get the cat? It’s very purple.” His voice was small, making him sound nervous.

She tilted her head in confusion, and the nurse responded for her.

“There is no cat there George, just a little girl.”

“Shut the fuck up, woman, there’s a cat there!” he snapped.

His reaction scared Marni a little. Although this wasn’t the first hospital she’d been placed in, his violent response was still enough to frighten her a bit.

Noticing Marni's flinch, he changed back to the seemingly harmless little man he'd been before. “Now, please, tell me about the cat. What’s it’s name?”

The nurse opened her mouth to speak, but Marni gestured for her to shush.

She wrote a lengthy entry on her pad. The cat belonged to the billionaire Adrian Veidt. She’d seen him with a purple cat once, it's name had been Bubastis. She wrote that Adrian had come to her and asked her to cat sit because Bubastis liked her and would probably bite him if he tried to pet her.

George smiled widely, accepting this explanation.

Walter made a face of disgust, his first real reaction to anything. It appeared that he wasn’t a fan of Mr. Veidt, which confused Marni. How could anyone not like Adrian Veidt? He was helping in Africa, and donated to a ton of charities. Marni had even seen him for Autistic awareness once.

And something about this Walter seemed familiar, like she’d seen him on television before. Marni decided not to ask. He was staring at her now, and it looked like there was nothing behind his wide blue eyes. His face was extremely blank. Instead of making her feel nervous, his empty expression comforted her for some reason.

The nurse looked angry as she walked over to George and Walter. She gave them each a pill with a paper cup of water. She watched each man to make sure they took their pill, and had to force feed Walter, shoving it in his mouth and making him swallow.

She told Marni that she should try to become acquainted with the two men before craft time and if either of them got too weird that she should just press the red ‘Help’ button. But she shouldn't have any problems because they'd just had their meds.

Marni took out her note pad again.

"I shouldn't have any problems. Thanks for showing me around." She didn’t really like the nurse very much, but it was usually best to be polite.

George gestured for her to sit on the day bed. “It’s great to finally have a normal roomie.” He tilted his head in Walter's direction, “This one doesn’t talk that much.”

Walter snarled.

George twitched.

Marni flinched.

This seemed to trigger something in Walter, who suddenly became extremely gentlemanly. He turned to her, his face somehow softer. “Apologies. Didn’t mean to scare you.”

Marni noted his voice, which was more of a guttural whisper. It sounded like her uncle, who smoked six packs of Marlboro Lights a day.

She started to scrawl words.

"S’okay. Just don’t do it again, K?

"Do you smoke, Walter?"

He quirked his eyebrow. “No. Only scum smoke.” There was a tone of bitterness to his voice.

George looked down at his feet. “They made me quit two years ago. Back when Walter first came here, he complained about the smoke a lot.” He shot Walter a dirty look.

Walter just stared, his eye twitching slightly.

"Just asking, cool it down," Marni scrawled.

Then George started talking, asking her again about the cat.

By the eighteenth question about Bubastis, Marni was getting annoyed. She bit at her fingers making small marks.

“What does the kitty eat?”

Okay, she was tired of this.

"Humans.” She drew a small smiley face after it. In her head she imagined a little smirk forming on her face.

George twitched and ducked under the covers.

Walter laughed. Needless to say, it sounded creepy.

After that, Marni didn’t tell any more jokes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The brown haired man smiled sadly at Walter in the visitors lounge. He was with a brunette who looked fairly uncomfortable, like she didn’t want to be there, and Marni couldn’t blame her. It’s always uncomfortable to the people who don’t belong here, because they might belong. And that is enough to scare people.

Walter was on his medication again, so he was a little out of it; his eyes were slightly glazed, as if he wasn’t sure if he was awake or asleep, but you could tell he was looking at the brown haired man full of disgust and familiarity. The brown haired man just looked at him with kind yet nervous eyes and spoke softly to him. Marni wasn’t sure what they were talking about, but it seemed to make the woman uncomfortable. Even though Marni couldn’t read people very well, it was still fairly obvious. She liked to watch the people in the visitor’s room, she felt like one of those people who studied an animals in their natural habitat. Marni Retinski studies the modern Sane American. Someday it would be on National Geographic, she was sure of it.

A Nurse came over and was giving the other man a clip board with a form that was labeled ‘Day Pass’. It appeared that this guy was taking Walter out. Marni wondered how he knew him.

The Brunette was now shifting her eyes left and right, from the brown haired man to Walter. Each of the men looked as if they were waiting for an answer. Walter nodded once and reached for the man’s hand, and was led out the door.
