Being born and bred in a city my whole life, I gotta admit that the idea of being in a village seemed uncomfortable to me. Little did I know, I enjoyed the time spent in 永春 so much more than 厦门.
Family photo with our relatives (my ah gong's brothers and their wives). For most of us in the 3rd generation, it was the first time we've been to our fujian hometown and I've never felt so welcomed in a foreign place. As we all know, it is not a habit of chinese people to explicitly exhibit their emotions, but nonetheless I could feel their warmth and happiness through their every actions.
Bro - fitting in very well lol. We kid that he's gonna be the next village headman. Check out the Lion King pose hahaha
Scenic walks available just right at our doorstep!
I LOVED THIS!! Papa bought us firecrackers + fireworks + 'sparklers' hehe. The 'sparklers' were more like magic wands! Freaking awesome
1st pic - the 1st edition of our zu2 pu3!! 2nd pic - the printed version! Unfortunately, qiqi's name is recorded wrongly cos ahgong gave the wrong name =/ I think she has to wait 80 more years before the 3rd edition is published lol
On the way to my great-granddad's place of burial. We had to navigate this steep path and all the adults (especially aunties) provided lots of entertainment haha. That's my aunt doing the tango or some kind of dance hahaha. On the other hand, papa proclaimed that he could go down with arms akimbo and went on to prove it lol.
Sightseeing - the tu3 lou2. Wasn't very interested but have to say it is impressive that this was built in the 1600s and still fully intact.
Check out how huge it is!! It's like a small enclosed village. Still, I wish there were more personal stories exhibited because I learn best that way lol. History without a face doesn't have much appeal for me.
Was told we were going to a museum that would explain the hokkien history. Turned out that it was a museum dedicated ENTIRELY to reinstating how Taiwan's culture / language / everything originated from China and it is therefore a part of China. Interesting efforts. There were at least 10 boards, and by the 5th I could predict the points raised in the paragraphs lol
This was one of the major highlights of the trip!! For me that is haha. First time to a hot spring spa!! Cameras weren't allowed inside so I couldn't take pictures of how awesome it was! Understand it from my p.o.v = person who hates cold is freezing in china. reaches hotspring which has jacuzzis/pools of temperatures 38-41°C. ULTIMATE BLISS!! There were diferent hot springs with different purposes (e.g. for muscle strains / rheumatism / etc) but the most popular one was the hot spring that claimed to boost metabolism and beautify skin lol. Shouted out to the aunts when I found it and they all came running haha.
Oh anyway I have a very adorable and pretty baby niece!! Played with her after every dinner hehe
Random chubby baby! Most of the babies there have humongous cheeks lol. Look like they are storing food in their mouths like hamsters
Another random baby, he looks like a lil playful monkey!
Not so cute people hahaha. But bro really looks like a teenager here seriously.
永春 was really wonderful, no matter where we went we would meet immediate relatives, even in the central town. And that made the whole place feel so homely and safe. I felt like I could wander the streets at night and be completely at ease. It is a strange but great feeling to have in a foreign land. Looking forward to more mountain climbing and river rafting when we go there the next time! =]
