Fight practice retrospective

Nov 19, 2014 09:12

Well, they make new young fighters every year...and it's been a long time since I was part of that group, and I move further away from that group every year. I was told long ago to stop depending on speed to win the fight...you'll run across someone as fast or faster than you...then what will you do? Well...the fact that I'm slowing down is making that little piece of advice even more pertinent.

I've become REALLY lazy with using my buckler as my secondary...it is sooooooooo easy to hide behind and the parries are simple movements. When I pick up my dagger it becomes especially apparent how lazy my movements have become. Have been quite frustrated about it. I'm parrying incorrectly (up and down instead of side to side. I'm trying to use the dagger to block shots my sword should be doing (thus opening myself WIDE open). I'm punch blocking...you don't even have a sail guard idiot...that's how you get fingers broken.

So....going to take the advice I give my Cadets and students....put my dagger away...go play single sword. My God it makes a difference quickly. I know I have near nothing to hide behind....actually have to use my sword to parry AND set up counter attacks. Movement is key again...can't stand still and just suck up hits like I can with buckler.

So...

ya...

Time to learn how to fight again...

Then maybe I'll be allowed to fight with a dagger again...

maybe.

Hopefully I'll get good enough for that new peerage....

sigh.
