1 Kings 19 'TEAM DESPAIR' or , 'TEAM RIGHTEOUS ANGER' ?
- which of the commentators is right?Ahab's actions - may be despised by
the Israelites in his role as King?
v.6, v.8 Tim Keller's sermon / providing for a range of needs
the angel ministers to Elijah in three ways:
1. physically; the angel touches him, feeds him, lets him rest
2. psychologically; God listens to him
3. spiritually; gives God's word
- what pulls Elijah out of his mood? hearing & obeying God's word.
"The challenge is just to keep going, to keep waiting in hope
even when, like Elijah, you feel like you've had enough."
Theme: Refocusing ~ Andrew Graystone
◘ A little cloud & a gentle whisper
Horeb, the mountain of God
- "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
... perhaps potentially a question of tender kindness;
Tim Keller: "God never asks questions to get information.
He asks questions to give you information."
Horeb = Sinai |
Exodus 19 * Rebellion / God's power
* Encounter with God
* Moses pleads with God //
Elijah's despair & plea
* Elijah's phrasing -
concerned for God
'your covenant, your altars, your prophets'
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
Manifestation (1) - does Elijah undergo a heart change?
- Display of God's power
- Elijah taking on too much respb.?
Manifestation (2)
not destructive (all this has taken place recently through
the sacrifices on Mount Carmel) - instead: God in the small places
v.18 Anointing successors

Judgement / Mercy
"Yet I reserve ... "
