TM Response #385 - Music

One of my favorite parts about working on the Muppet Show is the different types of music we've had. I'm not talking about just the musicians who have guest starred on the show, but the various other types of musical numbers we've done as well.

Being that we were based in a theater it was only natural that show tunes comprised a good portion of our repertoire. We did so many of them, I was surprised that we hadn't done an out-and-out musical before filming Muppets Take Manhattan in the 80s. Sure, we'd done the odd theme show here and there (Alice in Wonderland and the dance marathon come immediately to mind), but not a full-blown Broadway show.

But we don't limit ourselves to just show tunes. Old English music hall songs features a lot, for some reason that I still don't understand. I guess Jim or somebody must have had a fondness for that genre and it's one we've carried with us over the years. We've also done classical (straight and covered by the Electric Mayhem).

And of course I can't forget Wayne and Wanda, Sam Eagle's attempt at injecting a little bit of culture into the show. They would have been a decent act, if they weren't so accident-prone...
