Yesterday, Chebutykin made a post about some of the best meals, for an assortment of reasons, that she has had. She has some incredible stories. She asked her friends to come up with a few of their own. I kinda went nuts with mine. Here they are. What are yours?
1. The first time I had the house Greek Salad at Pappas' Restaurant in Tarpon Springs, FL. A traditional but nice Greek salad on top with an absolutely delicious potato salad underneath. The salad was overdressed enough that the dressing leaked into the potato salad. YUM! And feeding french fries to the seagulls after.
2. Sitting on the pillows at Caravan Serai (when it was down in the basement) on my 8th birthday. I remember loving that place and my parents were pleased not to be eating at McDonalds.
3. Going to the Best Steak House a block away from home when I was around 10 with my best friend. We felt so grown up to be eating lunch at a "sit down" restaurant without our parents. We even left a tip. I'm sure now that it was probably way to small, but we were proud that we remembered that part.
4. Sitting in a place in Victoria Crossing called At the Hop, drinking a blueberry malt and talking with Karl. There was a horrible snowstorm going on, but Karl and I had decided that we were going to hang out there so we went anyway. I think we were 17 or so.
I left the house, with my mother telling me I was crazy and a travel mug of hot cocoa.
I waited at Fairview and Grand for the bus, it wasn't coming so I started walking toward the next stop and then the next.
I stopped once at the Hungry Mind to melt the snow from my eyelashes. The Bus caught up with me at Hamline Ave.
When I got to his house, his Mother told me I was crazy.
Karl and I went to the restaurant and had a wonderful few hours until they told us that they were shutting down early because of the snow.
My bus got stuck in the snow briefly on the way home. As I walked up to the house, I saw that the snow was waist deep on our outside steps. Then I looked up to find my parents laughing at me from the front door. I love my folks.
5. On a month long trip with my Grandma and her friend Linda to visit most of the western states. We had tons of car trouble on that trip. Grandma had to call AAA four times to get us towed from one roadside or another. I think the Volvo went to 3 independant shops and 4 dealer shops on that trip. The last time was in New Mexico. Broken down in the middle of nowhere. Finally a car came along and us to the nearest Garage. It was a little place made mostly out of rusted metal. Across the dirt lot was a small wooden restaurant. No other building for miles if felt really isolated (especially to my 13 year old brain...Grandma was a brave woman.).
Grandma went back to the car with the mechanic while Linda and I went across the lot to his sister's restaurant. It had maybe 10 tables at the most. There, we had the best Mexican-American food that we had that whole trip. We ate at several Mexican-American Restaurants later in the trip, even a couple that were very "high-end". None of them beat that woman's food. None of them would serve me a vanilla malt with my food either.
Besides, it was the last time the car had to be fixed the entire trip and that was with a 10 days still to go. The guy also apparently charged so little that when Grandma brought me back home to MN, she mailed him and extra $50. She said that it was about what the dealer shops charged her for not fixing the problem.
6. The night during my engagement that we went to my his Mother's apartment and she made his favorite dish of Chicken Paprika. When we had a private moment she told me that the recipe was from Joy of Cooking and that Karl likes a lot of basil in his spaghetti sauce and in most things. That made me feel like she was really welcoming me to the family.
7. Using Bridal Privilege to grab a second piece of cake at my reception. The first piece was Chocolate with Cookies and cream filling, the second was white with Strawberries and Whipped cream.
8. A dress up fondue party in my teens. Reggiebrother chose took us literally. Reggiemom joked that he looked better in that dress than she did.
9. Dinner with the the Moneysnakes at the Canada Pavilion in Epcot. I was too loud and having too much fun.
10. The bowl of fresh fruit my M-i-L brought me in the hospital after giving birth to Sprinklekit.
