Holidailies Post 10 - Turkey Or Ham?

Dec 19, 2008 21:14

Normally we have turkey at Thanksgiving, turkey at Christmas, and ham (don't forget the black-eyed peas!) for New Year's Day. However, I've been craving ham for the past couple of months now. Sandwich ham doesn't cut it. Canned ham doesn't cut it. I had thought that H0rmel canned ham patties might scratch the itch. Fixed a couple of patties the other night... They didn't taste like Spam as I thought they might (they looked good in the picture on the can... kinda), and they didn't taste like ham.

I'm wanting the good, old-fashioned country ham. Something you can slice. Something you take the left-overs of and chunk up to make sandwiches. Yum.

So, now we just have to figure out the menu (Ma's wanting some broccoli, I think, whether we have ham or turkey), and if there will be any special cooking methods for which ever main course we choose. We could brine. We could rub. We could smoke. We could bake. We could grill. I really don't know what to do.

With my hip acting up the way it is, I'm hoping to get out of any cooking if possible. I lucked out for Thanksgiving, and didn't have to do anything. Felt odd, though.

I did catch Good Eats tonight, where Alton was fixing a country ham and a city ham. I'd heard (and tried) of using Coke when baking the ham, but he used Dr. Pepper and a little sweet pickle juice.

So, anyone have any ideas for cooking a ham? Any thoughts on turkey?
