Holidailies Post 9 - Christmas UFOs

Dec 18, 2008 22:57

Unfortunately, my wonderful stomach/neurological/endocrine/mystery problem has reared its ugly head again. I'm not really feeling up to posting, so this will be brief.

I remember during Christmas time, while we were still at our first house, there would be these odd lights in the sky we would see. On our way home from town, we would take the back roads (I really don't think there were any other kind back then), I believe it was State Route 81, but I'm not entirely sure. Heck, I don't even know technically where this location is. I believe Jonesborough may be the closest 'town', but other than that... Nothing.

In a slightly sharp turn to the right, we were able to look down into a valley on our left. That's where the Dallas House was, called such because of the resemblance it bore to South Fork in the show Dallas. During the night, when we'd come up to this curve, my father would slow down so we could get a better look at the Christmas UFO.

Up above the Dallas House, and way, way, way off in the distance, there was a string of about ten lights, of all different colors. The formed a line that ran along a slight angle, and were slightly droopy, for lack of a better descriptor. As we would drive along the road, the lights would seem to flicker, and sometimes even disappear. As a kid, it was really cool.

To this day, I don't know exactly what we were looking at. I'm sure with the help of Google Earth, I could find the Dallas House again, and from extrapolate which ridge of mountains we were seeing. We had already come to the conclusion that it was more than likely a ski resort, lit up for Christmas. Pa explained that the trees between us and them would make the lights twinkle like they did.

Given line of sight, and how the mountains work around here, we very well could have been seeing across the border over into South Carolina, I don't know. Also, given the fact that from our vantage point, the lights appeared to stretch almost a foot across the sky, a ski lift seems to make more sense than anything else.

I'll always remember that first night we saw them, though. Our magical, wondrous Christmas UFO.
