BOW adventures

I'm baaaack. On Thursday we drove to Wasilla. The weather was AMAZING. I have NEVER seen the mountains look that beautiful before. It was sunny the whole way down. There were many awesome views of McKinley. Usually it's covered with clouds when we drive by it but not this time. That is one incredible mountain. We could see the wind blowing the snow off the top of it too! Awesomeee. We got to Wasilla at 4 something I think and we checked into the hotel. All the rooms were full and the only one left was a suite and they gave it to us for a regular room price. Sweet! It had a kitchen, living room and bedroom. It was really windy and FREEZING in Wasilla. Eesh. After that we ate dinner and went shopping at Target. I got some shirts and other various things. Then we went back to the hotel and after awhile went to bed

Friday we woke up and got ready for the day..though we were slower than usual cause there was news on about the 8.9 earthquake in Japan. Yikes..that made me feel guilty about going away to a fun weekend. After we got ready and checked out of the hotel we had breakfast at IHOP and continued driving again. The weather was still sunny and amazing. It's nice to see all the mountains and glaciers hanging to the very tops of the mountains with sun shining on them..usually it's cloudy somewhere and don't get to see that. It didn't take too long to get to the camp where BOW was. A lady greeted us and told us where to park and said we were staying in cabin Iliamna! I was happy cause that's where we stayed last time and it's closest to the bathroom haha. As we drove up I saw a guy on a snowmachine that looked familiar..I guessed he was in charge of the tubing last year. Well he saw our car, walked over, looked in over at me and was like "I remember you from tubing last year!" OMG haha. There was another lady that did the snowshoeing class I was in last year (she was standing outside too) and she looked in and recognized me too! Aww

We parked and took the stuff up to our cabin. We met other of our cabin mates and became friends and hung out whenever we could for the rest of the trip! One of them was named Windy (short for Winnella or however it's spelled haha) and she was always laughing and so cheerful. The other was Jennifer and she was like the opposite of her haha. She wasn't unfriendly just not exactly emotional. She's in the Air Force so maybe that's why :P

We had lunch and went to our first class which was Winter Survival for me (Windy was in it too). One of the teachers worked for search and rescue and was also a mountain climber! He had climbed Foraker, Hunter and maybe others around McKinley. Awesomeee. I asked him if he knew who Joe Simpson was and he said yes and that he'd read his books! *dies* Haha. They talked about the right clothes to wear and survival packs and stuff. We also got to start our own fires and build snow caves! Mom and I got the hardest pile..it had been dumped by a truck the night before so the snow was hard. We didn't get to finish ours but another group did. We went inside..it was interesting cause it muted the sound outside and it was warmer! Cooool haha

After class we had dinner and then we went to 8 stations for 5 minutes and briefly learned about things like scat, bullets, archery, etc. After that a lady came up front from Bird TLC in Anchorage and showed us the owl she brought!! His name was Archimedes (Arc for short). She said they found him as a chick..he was laying on the ground under the nest..they put him back in the nest but the next day he was on the ground again. They decided to take Arc in and learned he was partially deaf. Aww. It was so cool to see..he hooted for us which was awesome haha. The lady also said he still did baby sounds and we got to hear that too..it was soooooo cute hehe. Arc had bonded to her and really loved her. Awww. So cool. Then it was time to go tubing! The snow was way more slicker than last year and we went out practically in the middle of the lake! It was fun haha. There weren't as many stars this time cause the moon was out. Ah well. Then we went to bed. Someone was snoring loudly all night. Ughhhh. I was awake just staring and being like "asdfg@#$%" in my head haha. Bleh

Saturday morning we had breakfast and went to the next class..Map and Compass for me. We learned about topographic maps and how to read them. That was awesome cause I love looking at topographic maps. The teacher gave us one of the area we were in. The compass part was hard haha. We went outside and tried to take bearings where we were from the mountains. It was windy and FREEZING though so that was like impossible haha. The male teacher was a rock climber and also knew of Joe Simpson! Awesomeee

We had lunch and had the next class after that..GPS for me. It was taught by the same teachers. That was waaay easier than Map and Compass haha. Everyone else was having problems but I thought it was easy. Maybe cause I've always been around technology. After we learned how to use it we went to find some geocaches they hid! That was really fun..I want to do it in real life!

After that was dinner. They had a raffle for a rifle..they used playing cards. When they were drawn they said like "if you have a face card sit down" till they pared it down. Windy had bought a card and she stayed standing till there were like..three or so people left. They asked Windy what her card was and she could barely squeak out what card it was haha..and she was the winner!! She was soooo happy haha..she ran up there and hugged them. It was so cool. There were movies and tubing again but since evil daylight savings time was happening that night we just went to bed

Yesterday morning we had breakfast and went to the last class..Outdoor Photography for me. Good thing we still had amazing weather. Our teacher's name was Roy Corral..he's a photojournalist and said he had photos in every major magazine (National Geographic!). He was setting up his books and one of them was A Child's Glacier Bay..I own that book! The book was him and his family in Glacier Bay. Soooo weird haha. He taught us techniques and different settings and stuff. We went outside and took some pics (still freezing and windy..). He used me as a model for one of his pics and said I was very photogenic! Awww. What an honor to be taught by him

Next was lunch, a picture slideshow of the weekend and then it was time to go. Awww. We exchanged emails and Facebooks and stuff with Windy and Jennifer (Jennifer lives in North Pole!). Windy said I was lovely to hang out with. :D The weather was amazing and sunny the whole way back. That was just unbelievable. We got to see the Wrangell Mountains not covered by clouds for once haha. Lovely. We kept stopping to take pics so it took longer than normal to get home haha. It was even colder in the mountains..it was 0 degrees and the wind was blowing 60 MPH! Jeeeeez. It was cool to see the snow getting blown off the mountains though. We saw a moose that had gotten hit by a car! (There was a car with a moose on the ground and people around it so I assumed it had been hit) Wow..that's scary. It felt sooo weird to be back in civilization again :P
