I mentioned in a
previous post that I was startled to hear the phrase "The Darkness is coming" in a Doctor Who season 3 episode. Tonight my daughter was watching "Sound of the Drums" and I heard it again in a way that convinces me that this is a reference to the season 4 story arc.
The Toclafane are talking to the Master and they say, "We have to escape, because it's coming, sir. The darkness, the never ending darkness. The terribly terrible cold. We have to run and run and run."
Gah!
The darkness refers to a dead universe without stars. We see that twice in canon:
1) The type of universe that existed on Malcassairo in Utopia (which was a stable, fixed point in time, in the year 100 trillion); and
2) The type of universe which Rose was warning about when Davros was destroying the stars (which was a rapidly progressing situation, reaching out through all the universes).
So if the Toclafane are saying that the darkness is coming, and they have to run away from it, they aren't talking about the stable, fixed darkness from Malcassairo. They're talking about an oncoming darkness - the one from Journey's End. HA! So the quotes in S3 about "The darkness is coming" ARE referring to season 4 and Rose's message!
I am amused. :)
ETA: My hubby reminded me today that the S5 finale also featured a cold universe without stars, but that was a different type of scenario in my mind, for reasons too long-winded to get into here. Still, I absolutely concede the similarity.
